Garmin DriveSmart recalculating routes

I have been a Garmin user for many years. Originally a MapSource user and then Basecamp from its introduction to the present. I use Basecamp to plan several thousand miles of routes in Europe every year. I have owned two Zumo 550s, a Zumo 595 and now a DriveSmart65 – which may shortly be ‘retired’ to the dustbin and replaced with my Zumo 595, for exactly the reasons described in this thread.

The Zumos would ask if you wanted the unit to recalculate, and if you did not want recalculation – the usual situation – one touch on the screen would prevent it. If you have gone to the trouble of planning a route, why would you want your SatNav to ignore your planning and do its own thing.

Yes, I accept that you can add lots of extra shaping points to constrain your route; and you can rummage around in the DriveSmarts menu system to skip a missed point. But hitting one ‘do not recalculate’ button is way easier and far safer.

I am pleased that Garmin has moved on and added much new and improved functionality but removing the ‘do not recalculate’ option is a giant leap backwards.

We may well be in the minority, but I have been a loyal Garmin owner/user/customer for many years. I do not appreciate the suggestion that I do not know how to use the software and equipment correctly. I know that the ‘do not recalculate’ option used to be essential for me but now it has been removed. We are not asking for anything new; we just want Garmin to put the ‘do not recalculate’ option back – the ‘majority’ do not have to use it if they do not want to.

i think you will try, go the opposite direction on the road I want to exit onto, make a U-Turn and then go in the direction that I want to go in. It tells me to do this while I am on the temporary exit that leads me in the direction I actually want to go in. I am essentially on the proper exit, but it doesn’t line up properly with the map and so the GPS thinks I am off route and automatically recalculates.I use routes to give real time data on arrival times at various points along the route and am not interested if a point is missed.

I agree with you 1000%  Mapsource was easy to use and worked great.  Not perfect but great.  I have exactly the same requirements as you.  I want to plan my own route.  I just want the GPS to alert me when a turn is coming up and give me an ETA.  Base Camp sucks.  I am shopping for a new GPS.  My Zumo 550 has been great but the maps are way too big for the available RAM.  Loading and managing maps in now a PIA.  I'm just not liking what I am see for sale. Only 16GB in the DriveSmart 86.  No USB for a direct connect to the PC.  I'm wasn't even sure if Bas Camp/Map Source would work with the DriveSmart 86.  It appears that it is a bit of a horror story.  Maybe I should just keep using old Zumo.
