Any ideas why my Garmin Basecamp gives 21.3km for a mapped walk in "properties" but the corresponding "graph" shows 20.3km? That's a big difference? Which should I go with if quoting for a book?

How was it created? Is it from a track created as you walked and then imported into BaseCamp or did you create it in BaseCamp? If the former try deleting one track point and see if it makes a difference
It was created as I walked and imported into BaseCamp. Just tried deleting a waypoint but makes no difference.
BaseCamp is recalculating the data using all the track points in the file to plot the graph and I think that will be the accurate figure. As Sussamb said, deleting a single track point forces BC to recalculate the summary statistics, so it is surprising that this doesn’t work to generate figures that agree.
If you export your track from BaseCamp and open it in Google Earth, I think you then should get the correct distance as GE will calculate its summary statistics from the coordinates of the track points it contains and not from the summary data in the GPX file header.
Also, after deleting one track point, what distance do you get if you select all track points (Ctrl-A) in the track dialog box?
You could also convert your new track to a route in BaseCamp using the same number of track points and see what the recalculated route distance is, as this will also be recalculated.
