Combining attributes of Tracks & Routes

Using Windows version of Basecamp with a Fenix 5X Plus for backcountry backpacking.

Running into a problem when two routable trails need to be connected by bushwhacking.

Correct me if I am wrong, as I am very new to Basecamp.  I've been using GaiaGPS and CalTopo for years.  Routes should be used when the course you wish to follow can be done on routable pathways.. roads or trails.  Tracks should be used when there are no routable pathways to follow.  But what how create course that requires both of these?

So one routable trail comes in close proximity to another, but don't actually connect.  You would need to go off-trail or bushwhack to get from the end of one trail to the beginning of another.  When I am creating the course using routes and reach the end of the trails, trying to 'jump' from one trail to the other inevitably results in a long obscure route taking me miles out of my way, when in actuality the 'jump' from one trail to the next is the absolutely the shortest distance.  The only way I found to get around this is to make multiple separate routes.

Seems like Basecamp is focused on those who use surface roads...

Any suggestions on how to make one continuous route that can connect two routable trails?

  • You need to change the routing mode to direct for that short section. I tend to use the direct activity for all my walking routes as allowing the route just to follow the routeable trails invariably won't take me the way I want.

To change just a short section open the route properties, select the point where you want direct activity to start, right click it and select edit via point. Set the routing to direct. Do this for all the points where you want direct routing to apply.

  • Great idea..  I thought the route properties were global.. for the entire route.  Didn't realize it was, or could be for individual points.  Will give it a try.

Direct routing won't work for me.. there isn't a stretch of backcountry trail that straight..  I would have to plot a million points to accommodate every twist and turn.
