Can't See Tracks on my Hard Drive

Just downloaded Garmin's Basecamp and the only devices shown are my two USB drives. Where is my C:\ hard drive? All I wanted Basecamp for is to load existing tracks and modify them. I clicked File expecting to see an OPEN entry then saw NEW. Clicked that and then Track and it brought up a drawing tool. Geez, I've been using Mapsource for years but it won't view Google Earth, so somebody told me to try Basecamp. How can I load a track into Basecamp from my hard drive? I downloaded the PDF owners manual but can't find anything in there to solve my problem. Would sure appreciate somebody giving me a heads up on this stuff. Thanks!

  • BaseCamp doesn't show you any non-removable hard drives. But happily, uploading GPX tracks from your hard drive to BC is actually straightforward:

First create a list in BC to hold your tracks and click on it to select.

Then click File > Import and browse to the C:drive folder containing the GPX file(s) you want to review in BaseCamp and click Open. (This will work for KML tracks too). Your track will then appear in the list and can be viewed/opened/edited etc

If you want to review a track in BC in Google Earth, since Garmin and GE broke this feature between them, you now have two options:

    1. Select the track and export it (File > Export Selection) to a C:drive folder as a GPX or KML, then open the fle inside GE from the C:drive folder.
    2. Otherwise a neat tool is the inexpensive BC2GE app from the Microsoft Store which has been written for this process, needing just two clicks - recommended and used daily by me!

The New England Trail Riders BaseCamp tutorials are a good source of information when learning the intricacies of BC: www.newenglandriders.org/.../.

Thanks Eyelet. Appreciate your help. Seems bizarre that BC doesn't show my hard drive. What was Garmin thinking!? Which program on planet Earth doesn't have OPEN as one of the options on the FILE menu? Well, BC. And since BC won't view my track in Google Earth, think I'll stay with Mapsource--a thousand times more user friendly than BC. And thanks for the link to your BC tutorials. Despite my "bad" attitude toward BC, it's probably wise to keep it installed since it will do things that MS will not do, like grabbing a track point and moving it to a different location.

  • It also can't read maps from devices, as for MS being more user friendly I struggled for a few weeks when BC first came out but haven't used MS for years. BC just takes a bit of time getting used to, more so if you've previously used MS.

As for no direct access to your c drive, it's designed to work with devices so accessing your c drive would complicate matters plus users would invariably end up unintentionally deleting files on the c drive. As Eyelet99 posted you can use Import instead.
