Removing 'safety camera' POI for EU travel

Hi, A Nuvi 2559LM, able to load routes & waypoints from MS and planning to tour the EU (apres Covid)

The AA et al recommend having the camera advisories removed but I can't see how or where that would be done.

I can switch them off OK in the Nuvi, but I'd rather they weren't there at all. Can they be removed?

  • They are only not allowed in certain countries and in France for example danger zones, which may or may not contain cameras, are legal.  If you have updated Garmin cameras then they are already legal in France etc so no need to turn them off. Bit more info please on exactly what you have installed?

  • Thank you, France is on the list I had in mind, Belgium, Lux, Holland, Italy (rural) & Swiss - perhaps Germany, Czech &  Austria on a seperate run.

My Nuvi 2559LM is as supplied out the box, 2016 model, never been connected to Express, BC or any other 'online' update to my knowledge. Thanks to this forum I managed to update my old MS v4 to v6.16.3 and can now transfer GPX files in windows folders - MS does not send or comminicate with the Nuvi via USB, but i can live with that.

To answer your Q? I have not installed anything, only routes, and nothing has been installed prior to my knowledge. It's 'as supplied' in every respect.

  • MS will work with your nuvi but you need to set it to mass storage mode.

I can't recall exactly when the rules changed in France, and have no idea about other countries, but I believe it was before 2016, in which case unless your nuvi was hanging around for a while before you bought it then it should be legal. You could check by looking in Custom POIs on your nuvi and see what description is shown for the 'cameras' in France.

If they appear to suggest they are speed cameras then you can remove them by removing the files from the POI folder on your device.

  • Thanks again, I failed that test miserably. I could not look in custom POI's, I didn't find that at all. I copied the 'francecyclops' file over to a windows folder, couldn't explore it & MS wouldn't open it or show it. The file is dated 9/10/15 (UK) and is a GPI file.

On the Nuvi I did not find any route to look at POI's, under 'my maps' I'm using 'CN Eu NTU 2017.10 W Eu'

selecting 'proximity alerts' I get 2 options - audio & Alerts - under alerts I get one option, a tick box for 'Garmin safety cameras' and that's it. In smaller writing under Proximity alerts it offers 'Custom POI's and safety cameras'

Also, it was second hand but on powering up it had a total hours of 54, been 3 or 4 trips to EU, and lay idle since 2018. The track archive showed several 'tourist trips' to some rural areas, some on foot & others a car.

Ahhhh . . . under 'about device' in the Nuvi, I found - Cyclops France Data Oct-09-2015 Dangerous zones database copyright 2014 --  every country is the same Oct 2015. It sounds like they may be the legal ones.

  • Yep, that sounds right.  Do a Where to, Categories, Custom POIs ... you will then see all the speed cameras listed ... the French ones should be obvious.

  • Well now, I proceeded to categories  . . . no Custom POIs option. Swiched cameras back on in alerts, still nothing even resembling that. Got Fuel, shopping, banks etc but that's it. I can see them in a POI folder via Windows, but not on the Nuvi.

Could a category be deleted inadvertantly? - by me cleaning it out on it's arrival. P.S. i'm approaching 'brainache' level  ;-)) but thank you for the guidance.

    ______  Edit

2hrs later :- search as I may there was no 'custom POI' option to be found. I did a doublecheck on the PC, the POI folder is still there and has the cyclops content. I did a restore defaults as per the manual - Settings > 3 bars > restore - it did most things, but still no custom POIs option in categories.

  • Strange. Maybe it's slightly different on your device. Wouldn't worry, from what you said earlier it all sounds ok.

  • Strange is a good description ;-)

Anyway, as I only tether to mobile data I have no intention of updating online, it all works fine now, I understand it much better, and I can load my preferred routes from Mapsource. That'll do me.

    Much appreciate your patience.

    Thanks.
