Elevation missing on Basecamp routes & Error message when device conected to Basecamp - Edge 1030

When I connect my Edge 1030 ito Basecamp I get the following error:

"The following can't be transferred:

1. Waypoints

2. Routes

Either the GPS doesn't support the items or BC needs to be updated. Press OK to transfer the other items you selected (if any)"

I can select ok and contiune using it however when I plot a route via Basecamp using the map (Garmin Cycle Map EU South West 2020.20) on the device (Edge 1030) I have noticed the elevation is missing. I am awear there is a seperate map for elevation (Garmin DEM map) but i cannot load this to Basecamp. The only maps avalible to view on Basecamp is Garmin Cycle Map EU South West 2020.20 & Garmin Cycle Map EU North East 2020.20. I can export the route to the device but the device also shows a flatline.

I have tried a 3rd party map which showes elevation in Basecamp but when i export it to the device I have the straight line again. I'm not sure iof this is cause by the warning at the start up or not.

Note;  if i plot a route directly on the device the elevation works.

The device is brand new and is fully updated as is bascamp and garmin express.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • One suggestion is to export your plotted track as a GPX file, then upload this to the on-line GPS Visualizer program: https://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input .

Next, convert your file to another GPX but click "Add DEM elevation data" at the bottom of the input screen and choose which elevation model you want to use.  Click convert and download the new GPX to your computer. Import this new GPX into BaseCamp and you should see that each trackpoint now has an elevation and the ascent/descent plot is visible as you expect.

  • The Edges can't  use "routes". They also don't  use "waypoints" in the way BaseCamp is expecting.

You have to use "tracks" for the Edges,

You can use the route properties in BaseCamp to create a track from the route.

The Edges does have the "locations" file (which are, basically, waypoints) but BaseCamp might not deal with that file.

BaseCamp only uses one map at a time. So, being able to select the DEM map means you can't do routing or even see anything.

BaseCamp should just magically use the DEM map in addition to the main map you choose.

BaseCamp needs the DEM map to add elevation data.

I created two routes in BaseCamp, one with the DEM map and the other with the DEM map moved to another folder.

The elevation data was added with the DEM map and not added without the DEM map.

The 3rd party map might just be displaying elevation (as a hill shadow?) but might not have the elevation data (or have the data in a format that BaseCamp can use it).

  • Thanks for the response. When I plug in my Edge I can only see two Europe maps on BC. How do i use the DEP map on DC? The 3rd party does have the elevation on the route when you click "Graph" but doesn't send it across to the Edge. If I use "tracks" will that have elevation? Ill have another play with it in an hour or so

  • I'll give this ago when I get back on my PC. Would you have to do this for every single route/track?

  • Yes I think you would.

Another thought - if you select the 3rd party map which shows elevation in Basecamp, have you tried right clicking on a  track and then clicking "Set Selected Track to Map Elevation"? If BC can read the DEM it should add elevation data to the track.

The track isn't automatically created for a route. So, you have to create the track for each route (and when you change the route).

he 3rd party does have the elevation on the route when you click "Graph" but doesn't send it across to the Edge. If I use "tracks" will that have elevation?

If BaseCamp shows the elevation profile, that should mean BaseCamp can use the elevation. It should add the elevation to the track points.

Note that GPX and TCX are text files. You will be able to see if the points have elevation. (Notepad++ is a good program to use to view these text files).+

  • When I plug in my Edge I can only see two Europe maps on BC. How do i use the DEP map on DC?

I use BaseCamp with the maps installed on a virtual USB drive (it's quicker than using the device).

I use the following to create and mount the disk image file:

    https://www.ltr-data.se/opencode.html/#ImDisk

You have to be sure the drive is indicated as being removable.

I was able to copy the maps from the 1030 to the \Garmin folder on the virtual drive.

You also need to copy Device.fit and GarminDevice.xml (maybe, you only need one of the files).

    ================================

I got the elevation to work using the maps on the virtual drive. It doesn't appear to work with the maps on the device. It doesn't make sense that one would work but the other doesn't.

  • Ok I finally got time to have a little bit of a play with BC and I think have found a solution.

As you said before the Edge uses "tracks" instead of "routes". However if you drag and drop a route onto the device it automatically converts this to a track. However even if I used the 3rd party map with the DEP data the converted track does not have the elevation data. If you convert the route to a track on BC and then drop the track onto the device this will have the elevation data. I haven't used this in anger yet but I would imagine this will work.

  • I didn't try the drag and drop thing. I only tried exporting the track.
