Basecamp with Fenix6 - unusably slow

I just got a Fenix 6s pro.  I hike, and I want to be able to install a hiking route that will display on the pre-loaded topo maps that come with the watch.  I am unable to use Basecamp to load the Fenix's topo maps due to horrendously slow response time.  I've seen this issue reported multiple times over the last year - both for Mac and Windows variants.  (Fwiw, I'm on Windows 10 with 8G RAM.)

I waited (hours) until Basecamp finished "indexing" the watch maps before trying to use it.  As near as I can tell, it has completed -  there is no visual indication that Basecamp is still processing the maps.

It takes many minutes to get a new section of the map displayed after panning (I am at the default Medium detail level), and trying to zoom takes even longer.  The app is completely unusable with the Fenix maps due to this slowness.

This is what I have already tried (without success):

1.  Move the .img map files to a separate usb drive under a GARMIN directory.  Basecamp sees the maps but can't use them.  I get an error dialog saying "An error occurred while attempting to use <mapname>".  (This happened after I had already processed the maps from the watch, in case that affects anything.)

2.  Uninstall/reinstall Basecamp.  No change.  The map processing is fully completed - topo maps remain unusably slow.

3.  Garmin Express to install the maps from my watch to the computer.  I do not get the option to install any of the Fenix6 maps when the watch is connected.

4.  Use Garmin Connect (website) to create a route ("course") instead of using Basecamp.  The problem with Garmin Connect is that it does not have the topo/trail maps so I cannot create a usable hiking route on a trail with it and I see no way of letting it use the topo maps from my watch.

5.  I've talked with Garmin Support (chat).  The person knew how to use Basecamp and could give me info about how Basecamp is "supposed to" work.  But he couldn't explain the slowness and didn't seem to know about any issues using it with the Fenix6.

For the record, I've also noticed that file transfer from the watch to my computer is also terribly slow.  The time it took me to copy maps from the watch to my local laptop was 10X slower than the time it took me to re-copy those same maps down to a separate USB flash drive.  I was using the same USB port on my laptop.

Has anybody been able to get Basecamp to work properly with the Fenix6 topo maps?  Or is there another Garmin route-planning software product that I can use instead with my Fenix6 topo maps?

  • gpsfiledepot is good for state topos. openstreetmap is good for a base street map. Just search for both. I use on W10. I use garmin connect to make a "course" by importing any .gpx file. I might just save/export the gpx from Basecamp and import to GC as a course. Then sync to Garmin Connect and you have the course on your watch. I do that with trails for hiking/mtb/trail running. You'll need to use "navigate" as an activity to bring up the course.

  • Thank you for the response!   I tried a separate non-Garmin program to create a route (used Gaia GPS), saved the gpx as you said, and then imported it to  the watch wiith Basecamp.  That did work - yay!  The route didn´t overlay exactly on the watch's topo maps, but it was close enough.  I still think it's a shame that Garmin's route-planning program doesn't work with the Fenix6, and that I can't use the topo maps that came with the watch to plan my routes.  However, this approach does work and I really appreciate the info - thanks!

  • It takes hours to load the maps ... realy unusable
