How GPX files are managed by the GPS

Hi,

My question is about how GPX files are managed by a GPS unit (and not by the human operator) particularly the Etrex 22x. I am posting this here because I cannot find a place in the forum for general questions.

So here is the daily routine:

1. Turn the GPS on while making sure that device is tracking

2. Operator carries with him his GPS while moving around in his vehicle

3. Operator marks notable events/location with waypoints

4. When returning home, GPS is turned off

5. The next day, the cycle is repeated

6. After a week, the GPX data is downloaded

Here are my questions:

1. Will there be only one gpx file that will contain track data for the multiple days the gps was used for tracking?

2. Will there be only one gpx file for all the waypoints that was created?

3. What are the conditions that will cause the gps to create a new gpx file ( for both tracks and waypoints)?

4. Is it possible to have a gpx file that will contain both track and named waypoints?

Thanks for the help

  • I don't own that device, but in general for handheld devices the answers are:

    1.  Unlikely

    2.  No

    3.  The Track Log is limited to 10,000 points.  Devices can be  set to archive the log or cycle back to the beginning once 10,000 points are reached.  My device makes a new gpx file for every waypoint and I would think this would be standard for all handhelds.

    4.  If you attach the device to a computer and run BaseCamp you will be able to select the gpx files on the device and export them into a single file.

Side Note.  I would recommend saving the track log at then end of each day and then clearing the log.  This would safeguard against any glitches that might occur with auto-archiving during a whole week.

  • This is off topic for BaseCamp but I'll leave this here as the question has been answered but will lock the topic. If you have further issues relating to your device try posting here forums.gpsreview.net/.../garmin-handheld-gps-and-fitness-gps-forum
