BaseCamp track is inaccurate on displayed map

BaseCamp map shown has several tracks (green one is selected) in error (probably offset) by 40 m or more. Trying to cope, I downloaded Garmin Map Updater (whatever that program is) but it failed "A connection to the server could not be established. Please ensure that you have a connection to the Internet and try again."

Details:

I am using BaseCamp downloaded two days ago, using up-to-date Windows 10 on a good-quality laptop. Track is in flat country in Illinois. Nearby landmarks include a vehicle parking spot, a local road and two Interstate highways. The BaseCamp map shows the track crossing one of the Interstates, which is fenced-off, and looks erroneous in other places. Importing the .gpx to Google Earth puts known locations on the track very accurately, even on the correct side (right-left) of a country road, so the problem is with BaseCamp not the Garmin device reporting the coordinates.

The Garmin Map Updater download problem happened despite the fact that I had just seconds before downloaded the installer .exe file from the Garmin support site on the Internet. It may be due to my popup blocker discovering that tiqcdn.com was being used by Garmin. That site has security issues.

  • MapUpdater is an old program used to update maps on a Garmin device, it's been superseded by Express.

What map do you have installed on your PC for BaseCamp to use, or are you using the one from your device?  Or are you not using anything other than the base map that came with BaseCamp?  If so that isn't an accurate map which would explain why things don't match.

Let me see if I understand. I don't recall installing any maps to use with Garmin equipment and the system directory  ...Garmin\BaseCamp\Maps\Global Application Basemap v2.gmap\Product1\Global_Application_Basemap_v2 has 3 files from Nov 2015. So using the map that came with BaseCamp, is the problem, the map is inaccurate, Garmin provides an inadequate map and the latest, current BaseCamp blithely displays it without any indication that it is defective.

I was tracking a dog that appeared to have beeen wandering back and forth over a busy national highway. Lost sleep worrying about it until Google Earth indicated the dog was behaving as trained.

  • The basemap isn't meant to be accurate. You should either use it in conjunction with a map read from a device or a map installed to your PC for BaseCamp to use. If you read through the BaseCamp page you'll understand this www.garmin.com/.../
