Satellite imagery and zoom layers in Garmin

As a long time Delorme PN-60 user, I just switched over to a Garmin 66s in May of this year.  Still getting used to Basecamp and the GPS unit in general.  I have a Birdseye subscription and have downloaded some satellite imagery.  The problem is that all the imagery is taken when the leaves are on the trees. This makes it difficult to distinguish between hardwoods and conifers, which in Upper Peninsula of Michigan the latter often delineates wetter areas. With Topo North America I had the option of downloading black and white satellite images that were taken in the winter with the leaves off.  I went to Google Earth today to check out an area that I was going hiking at today and noticed how the images were taken with the leaves off and made me wish for those types of images in Basecamp and on my GPS.  Are there any options--paid or otherwise--for getting some satellite images with the leaves off?

The other thing I am missing from the PN-60 is the ability when you zoom in/out to have certain map layers appear.  For example if I have loaded topos and satellite layers, at one zoom level you view the basemap, and further in you get a topo view and further yet you see satellite images.  You could set the zoom levels at which these maps were viewable in Topo North America.  Is there any way of doing this in the 66s? Currently if I want to view a satellite image I have to go into map configurations and turn off the topo layer. That's a pain. If I can't set zoom levels to trigger a particular map configuration, can I quickly turn off a layer without having to click 3-4 times, e.g Enter -- map configuration--- arrow down to map layer-- click enter to turn on -- set the display brightness?  I may be mis-stating some of the steps as my GPS isn't at hand at the moment.

Finally, the basemap that came with the PN-60 and Topo North America had a lot more detail, e.g. roads and trails, then what came with Basecamp, which is hardly much detail at all.  Thankfully I have the OnX chip in my 66s, and their basemap is good.  However, when planning trips in Basecamp, without the GPS attached, I am left with a very poor quality basemap.  Just curious if something else is available, even at a cost.

Thanks much.

  • For your questions about your device I suggest you ask here www.gpsrchive.com/.../index.htm where in the forum you'll get advice from users of your device.

As for BaseCamp you have a couple of options to improve the maps available without your device connected.  There are numerous OSM maps that are free that can be installed to your PC  for BC to use. They can also be installed to your 66 if you wish.  Just google Garmin OSM maps.

You could also copy the maps from your 66 to a removable drive, either physical like a memory stick, or a virtual drive, and BC will read maps from that so your 66 doesn't need to be plugged in.

As for BirdsEye, it is  what it is, you can't choose what time of the year for the imagery.
