Basecamp completely disregards avoidances

So I have noticed that there are some roads that Garmin thinks are still there, but they are dead-end streets. I have been adding these as avoidances as I discover them, however, basecamp will still route through them. Many times it is not even the best route. It is a little annoying because I am still learning my way around my area of work (I am an inspector so I drive a different route daily) so I don't know every dead-end and though I try to make a mental note of them if I haven't driven that particular route in a while or only a few times I tend to forget. Is there a better way?

  • How are you adding them as avoidances?  Having done so are those avoidances in the same folder as the routes you're creating?  Have you set the correct avoidances in the routing profile you're using?  If you can provide some screenshots that may help folks troubleshoot.

  • I have the avoidance tool on my toolbar at the top, I haven't found another way to add it so I am not sure what you mean. I am including a screenshot. I only have the one profile and it shows there I have both items checked. I took a screenshot of my setup and one of the list of avoidances. Not sure what other view you might need. You can clearly see it trying to take me down the road that I added the avoidance to.

  • That's weird as it all looks correct. Did you create the route before the avoidance area?  If so recalculate the route. If not then I'm not sure what is going wrong.

  • I thought that might be the issue too, but this is a brand new route that I created after I created the avoidance just to test the theory. IDK what the issue is. I did go ahead and report the error through the error reporting tool but until a new map update comes out, I was trying to use the avoidances. I just can't figure out what is wrong. Thanks for your help.

  • OK I've just used the area avoidance tool in my BaseCamp (it's something I've used in the past but not for a while).  Please note I'm running v4.6.2

First time I wasn't successful, as I had the avoidance created in a different routing profile to the one that I used to create the route.  Once they matched the route recalculation avoided that area.

So first I'd check that the routing profile of the area avoidance tool matches the routing profile you're using.  If they do match and you're not using 4.6.2 you might want to try using v4.6.2

  • You keep saying profile, I don't know that we are on the same page. I have separate lists, is that what you mean? If so I have a work list that I do all my routes in. I just delete my stops and reuse it over and over. I made sure I was in that list and I recreated the avoidances just to see if that was the issue, because I am unclear what you mean by "profile". Also my version is 4.7.2, it updated not that long ago so I am thinking it is the more up-to-date version to date.

  • Nothing to do with lists. BaseCamp uses activity profiles, eg car, motorbike, truck, direct etc.  If you look at the area avoidance tool you'll see the activity profile in a drop down list top right.  That activity profile must match the activity profile of the route otherwise if will ignore the avoidance you've set. From what I can see your profiles do match but you just need to check.

As for the versions, yes 4.7.2 is the latest, all I'm suggesting is if it's not working correctly then revert to 4.6.2 as that definitely works.

  • Oh okay that clears that up thank you! Sorry had a "blonde moment". Now that we are on the same page I just tried recreating all 3 of my avoidance areas in the profile "driving fastest" I renamed them too just to make sure I didn't delete the wrong ones. I have everything else set to driving fastest as well. I even tried rerouting just to see if it made a different and unfortunately I am still not having any luck.

I just don't know what I am doing wrong here. I would just route them in google and then upload the map, but because I have so many inspections to do in a day that would become very tedious when I can just load the list in basecamp, route everything, then load directly to my Garmin device. I wish I could just move the route around like you can do in google maps and shape the route the way I want.
