Moving Basecamp default database from my SSD Drive C: to a new external hard drive

I am running Basecamp 4.6.2 on Windows 10. After a decade of use, I now have a large set of GPX tracks, BirdsEye JNX files and custom map KMZ files and need to move the complete Basecamp default database off my C: drive and onto to a new external drive to free up space.

Is this as straightforward as:

1. Backup Basecamp as usual with File>Backup

2. Create a new folder for the database on my new external drive

3. Create a new empty database with Edit>Options>General>+New Database pointing to this new folder (with Basecamp restart)

4. Restore the backup file

5. Switch the database back to the default database and delete it with Edit>Options>General>- Delete Database

6. Delete folder: C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp

Is there anything I have missed?

  • With some helpful advice from SUSSAMB on the GPSrChive forum, my successful workflow was as follows:

    1. Backup Basecamp as usual with File > Backup.

    2. Create a new folder for the database on the new external drive e.g. "X:\BCDB".

    3. In Basecamp, create a new empty database with Edit > Options > General> +New Database e.g. name "My Library" pointing to the new folder X:\BCDB and switch to it (NB Basecamp will restart).

    4. Check you now have an empty collection called "My Library" and then close down Basecamp.

    5. In File Explorer, go to "C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\BaseCamp\" which is where your data is stored in Windows 10.

This will contain a folder named 4.6 if like me you are using Basecamp 4.6.2. There may also be other folders with earlier numbers corresponding to legacy versions of Basecamp that you used. Earlier folders can be disregarded for this excercise.

The Basecamp folder will contain at least the Database folder (I have JnxFiles and KmlOverlays folders too):

    - Database (this holds your collection of tracks, routes, waypoints and the List Folder structure).

    - JnxFiles (this holds any Garmin Birdseye maps or satellite images that you have in Basecamp).

    - KmlOverlays (this holds any Garmin Custom maps that you may have in Basecamp).

    - You may have other folders here including those for geocaches and geotagged images if you have saved these in Basecamp.

    6. In File Explorer, go to the database on the external drive e.g. X:\BCDB\Basecamp and delete the 4.6 folder.

    7. Copy the entire C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\BaseCamp\4.6 folder and paste it into X:\BCDB\Basecamp.

    8. Open Basecamp and you should see "My Library" now populated with your List Folder structure and all tracks, routes, waypoints, Birdseye and Custom maps etc.

    9. You can compare the contents between "My Library" in your new directory and "My Collection" in your original default directory - these should be identical. If they match, backup Basecamp again with File > Backup to a second hard drive or to the cloud. If they don't match, something is amiss.

    10. There are now two options for removing the data from your C: drive:

    A. My preference is this option which allows me to retain the default directory available for example if I want to use Basecamp somewhere but don't want to take my external drive with me.

Switch Basecamp back to the default database and check you are viewing "My Collection". Then systematically delete each List Folder and each List in turn, and empty the "Unlisted Data" folder until "My Collection" only contains the empty "Unlisted Data" folder. All data will now have been deleted from the C: drive and "C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\BaseCamp\4.6" will now be tiny in size. Any legacy folders e.g. 4.4 or 4.5 can also be deleted at this point.

    B. I am told that the other way is to switch the database back to the default database in Basecamp and then delete it with Edit > Options > General > - Delete Database. Then in File Explorer delete folder "C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\BaseCamp\" to remove all the data including the legacy folders.

    That's it - job done!

  • For those who are interested, multiple BaseCamp database management options are outlined at:

GPSrChive > BaseCamp > Data Management.

  • Computer died, pulled hard drive, where are the basecamp created routes kept? I need to find them and transfer to my new computer

  • Your routes, tracks and waypoints are kept in a file named Alldata.gdb and your BaseCamp folder structure in a file named FolderData.gfi

These can be located in C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\BaseCamp\4.7

Note that these are usually hidden files so you may need to check Hidden items in File Explorer > View to see them.

If you want to copy your previous BaseCamp collection from your old hard drive and don't have a back-up file available, you will need to delete this folder on your new computer and replace it with a copy of the folder from your old hard drive. NB Make sure BaseCamp is closed before doing this. You only need the folder with the most recent version, the others can be disregarded.

I think that your new computer needs to be running the same version of BaseCamp (e.g. 4.7 as shown above) to use this method. If you do need a legacy version, these can be downloaded from the Sottware Updates section of the GPSrChive site: https://www.gpsrchive.com/BaseCamp/index.htm
