Basecamp upgrade to 4.7.2 lost tracks & imagery

My recent Basecamp upgrade to 4.7.2 resulted in it losing almost all of my Library collection. Whilst it is easy enough to reconstruct my tracks from the original GPX files, the Birdseye aerial photography less so, as it was derived from within Basecamp whilst I had a Birdseye subscription.

A bit of hunting and I found the location of all the aerial photography files:-

  • C:\Users\john\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\JnxFiles

and yet more copies in a cache:-

  • C:\Users\john\AppData\Local\Garmin\BaseCamp\DeviceCache\feab38fe-29e5-41a7-9953-a09dc77956c6

So how to get Basecamp to recognise them?

  • Yes, if you've stored the jnx files you're ok to copy them to the Montana, they are though locked to the device that you bought the subscription for, which I assume was the Montana?

    Yes the subscription was for the Montana.  So the situation is that I can manually copy the JNX files onto the Montana and it will 'see' them.
    What is less clear is how to get Basecamp to recognise them.  Pointing the database at the file structure that contains them has not worked, and I can't see any other method to force it to do so, like setting paths etc.  It's own repair mechanism to fix it didn't work, and I see no way of activating that repair mechanism either.

  • You need to copy them to a memory stick or sd card or your Montana. From there you can import them into a list or folder in BaseCamp

    Great - I imported/copied them from my Montana back to Basecamp and I'm finally back where I was pre-upgrade.

    Having worked 20 years in IT through all sorts of supposed upgrades, that this happened is no surprise, in fact I'm always pleasantly surprised when they result matches the promise.  The pleasant surprises never exceeded the expect fails though.   One 'upgrade' I did was so bad that the US company supplying the software started flying in its customer critics from around the world, including here in Australia, to headquarters in Florida to help them fix what they screwed up.   If only Garmin......   Slight smile
