Basecamp 4.7.2. map display questions

I have some questions for Garmin Basecamp 4.7.2.

1.) I installed the latest 2021.10 Europe map from a BMW Motorrad navigator V to PC. The map on the navigator shows DEM data (elevation). However, the in Basecamp, the map does not show that and is flat (in 2D view and 3D view). How can I see the map with hills and mountains on PC?

2.) On the Zumo 595, I currently have map 2020.30 Europe. When I connect the device to PC, I can not select that map as I always get the error "An error occured while trying to use City Navigator Europe NTU 2020.3 map product". I tried on 3 PCs, I get this error on 2 of them, on 1 the map works. Any ideas?

3.) When I use the Europe NTU 2020.3 from the Zumo in Basecamp, it shows DEM data, but only for half of the map (North europe). When I switch to the other map for South europe, it has no elevation data. Why?

Thanks!!

Top left hand corner of the map is a blue diamond, hover pointer over said diamond and perspective/scale adjusters will appear.

Hi Robert, thanks for your reply. I changed the perspective, but the problem is I don't see the DEM data at all (everything is flat). This in the below screenshot should be part of the Alps, but there are no mountains at all. On the device from which this map was installed on the PC however, the mountains are visible.

  • Possibly the problem is that BaseCamp can only display one map at a time.  If the DEM data isn't included in the map data, but is in a separate 'map', then you won't see it.

Good point. I suspect the gmapdem.img is used for elevation.

But on the other hand, the elevation is visible when the Zumo is connected (so when there are supposedly 2 maps used, the gmapsupp and the gmapdem).

Considering there can only be one map visible at a time, the elevation should be visible on the map installed on PC, but it is not, it is actually visible only with the Zumo connected to the PC.

  • I don't have a Zumo, so this is supposition but you mention gmapsupp and gmapdem. The main map is gmapprom.img, gmapsupp.img is a supplemental map. The EU map as it's over 4gb is split into North and South as you mentioned. So it could be that gmapprom.img is the North map and includes DEM data but the South map, gmapsupp.img, has a separate DEM map

Good explanation, this is probably the cause. I however do not understand why the elevation data is not included in the map installed on PC.

Moving to my other points, do you have any idea why the  map from the Garmin (EU 2020.30) does not work in Basecamp when I connect the Zumo (error in my first post)?

I called Garmin support and they are unable to help :-(

  • If it's working on one, as you say, then the error is with the other 2 PCs.  I don't know why they report an error when the other one doesn't.  Would it not make more sense though to use Express and install it to your PCs?

I suspect that too. More precisely, I suspect that there is some unfinished or corrupted installation of that map on the PC. However, I can not reinstall this same map back since I can now only install the latest version.

Do you know if there are any registry keys in windows related to the maps, so I can try to delete these?

  • Is there some reason why you want the older map?  Why not just install the latest and then it's sorted.  As for registry keys, sorry I try not to mess with those.

2 reasons - first because I just want to figure out why it does not work and second, because this map is still installed on the Zumo (no update yet), so in this way I would make routes on the same map version.
