BirdsEye select not possible for new Edge 1030 Plus?

Kindly ask Garmin guys why

1 new Edge 1030 Plus is not properly recognized by currebt Basecamp version?

2 why it is not possible to activate and download already paid BirdsEye Select Raster Maps to Edge 1030 Plus device (device properly registered and shown on Garmin Express, maps 2,5 k km2 bought properly on Garmin website; download possibke on same PC with old Garmin Edge 1000 (and other credit abonnement for sure)).

Please tell when proper downloads BirdsEye Select map to Edge 1030 Plus will be enabled and fixed by Garmin.

Thanks

  • No idea why BaseCamp isn't recognising your Edge 1030 properly, although perhaps you could explain exactly what you mean by properly?

As for BirdsEye, if you had a subscription for your 1000 you need a new one for your 1030.

  • For sure I bought a new subscription in order to activate it in BaseCamp for the the new Edge 1030 Plus.

When starting BaseCamp with the Edge 1000 Plus connected via USB, BaseCamp shows a message that it cannot identify "the Garmin device 'GARMIN' properly and functions only limited available.

Trying to use BirdsEye-button in BaseCamp then leads to another failure message (device connected cannot connect to BirdsEye ...) and bo BirdsEye activation/ map download possible.

Doing the same 10 seconds afterwards with old Garmin Edge 1000 works without problems ä.

  • OK, that wasn't clear from your post.  This is likely to be an account issue so you'll need to call Garmin Product Support.

  • Yeah thanks, I did yesterday

1 st call: reaches nice guy of Garmin support after 10 min in product support hotline who said he has not really a detailed knowledge of BaseCamp and BirdsEye Select, both Garmin software and maps and he cannot help with this issue

2nd call: after waiting 20 minutes on the hotline I gave up (Garmin lets his clients pay even for waiting on the hotline according to the unknowing support guy from the 1st call)

Sounds like a joke but is unfortunately true.

I basically like Garmin, use Edge devices since a lot of years and had good experience with customer service in the past - in contrary to my experience in these days and with the Edge 1030 Plus as it is now.

But it is as it is ...

I think Garmin has to do a lot of software updates in BaseCamp and for Birds Eye and adaptions of the firmware of the device.

But thank you for your advice.

  • I just tested all the Birdseye thing with my Edge 1030 Plus.
Bought Austria Alps BirdsEye for 19.90 Euro.
Did all what is suggested in Videos for activating Birdseye - to no avail. Just as  describes. 1030 PLUS cannot connect properly to Bascamp. Errormessage as described above. Birdseye activation not possible - errormessage as described above. It is definitly not an account problem - Bascamp does not work as it should!

Then I thought, ok, 19.90 is ok for a test, I plugged in my normal 1030. I was able to activate Birdseye for that device and download an area.
And now off topic: it is a shame that Garmin does not tell, that buying Austria-Alps-Birdeye includes an area of only 48x48 km. And the map you get is a scandal! It is completely unsuitable for mountain biking. Far too rough, no trails at all. There is even 19.90 Euros thrown out money.
    Long live OpenMTBmaps!

    EDIT:
I just had a closer look to the description of the Birdseye purchase: yes, it says „up to 2,400 km2 with one purchase“. It‘s my fault that I did not recognize that this is an area of 48x48 km only...

  • I am so glad mcinner1 was so kind as to test it too as he i a very experienced user.

So it is a Garmin problem with selling their new top device without securing its compatibility with Garmins software. This is the shame from my point of view.

Also I habe the impression from correspondence with Garmin support - (costly) calls and mails, that Garmin support is not aware of the issue and tries to dispose of the questions with sayings like "you have to buy a new subscription" and so on. Which is true but if users write or explain the problem in detail maybe Garmin support should think about what they are told and not answer general advices.

Maybe someone of Garmin itself will face the problem with the new device and initiate its fixing.

I personally deem BirdsEye maps - they are KOMPASS-maps - not so bad. Yes rhey are not so detailled like eg Alpenverein maps but I like them better as the hiking trails are with numbers so it is better for me to use.

I even use them when hiking in the alps - as long as my Edge 1000 crashed completely yesterday and I have to throw it away and get my bew Edge 1030 Plus baxk from the shop where they czrrently chech it as the display is rather dark in shadow (now I learned from mcinner et all that this is a feature of the newer responsive displays)

  • today checked a trick posted in another threat here. when deleting GarminDevice.xml BaseCamp does not show error message that device could not be recognized properly.

Anyway BirdsEye Download to baseCamp with Edge 1030 Plus is till not possible.
Garmin, please fix this bug asap.

    thanks
