How can I load maps into Windows Basecamp?

I have a BMW Navigator V, and want to plan routes using Basecamp; it works when the Nav is plugged into Windows, but it's unuseably slow. I understand I can load the map into Windows and Basecamp will ideally be more useful - but I can't figure out how to do it.

Express shows no options to do this; my Express version just has tiles for my three Garmin devices.

I've searched the forums and the answer is always "use Express" - but I don't see how.

  • Have you ever updated the maps on your Zumo? Until you have the option in Express to install them to your PC won't exist.  If you have then select your Zumo in Express and select the Map options, one will be Download to computer.

While I have lifetime updates on all of my devices, I've never heard of BC not accepting older maps, but this is worth a try.

Connect the device to your computer.  Then open Express - Make sure you have the most recent version.  Then click on the Device once it's connected, and next screen you will see in BLUE type towards the top, Map Details. Click on that.

On the next page it will name the Map you have, and under that in BLUE type, it will say Map Options, click on that.

On the bottom half of the screen, you will see the option to install to your computer and the default location is C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps.  Click on 'Install to Computer' and walk away. Even with the best of connections, the Garmin server is pretty slow so it might take an hour or so to download and install.

After it's done, when you start BaseCamp, do not have the device connected and see if you see the NA map now.

If this doesn't work, and you don't see the Map Options, depending on how old the NA map is, you may have to update it. If that's the case, shop around for a good deal on a lifetime license.

    Good luck

I know Sussamb.  You never see errors.  Things are always lightning fast, and Garmin is beyond reproach with all of their cutting edge software.  I get it.

Instead of constantly providing replies with Non-Answers to everyone, and proclaiming how great everything works for you, why don't you instead READ the request, and actually provide a meaningful answer?

  • But SUSSAMB did answer the original question with the correct answer.
If the OP has not yet updated his maps on the device the option to Install to Computer will not be present in Garmin Express.

Umm, that's exactly why I PROVIDED THE COMPLETE steps AND what to look for, so he can confirm if it's the age of the map, that he never mentioned in his original post.

He CLEARLY said he just sees the Device Tiles, that says to me, he didn't drill deeper, so I gave him the FULL instructions so a simple fix doesn't take days of back and forths.  And if he goes through all that, and confirms it's the age, I then suggest to update.

Providing FULL answers saves people a ton of time in having to wait a day for each single baby step, one ... at ... a ... time.
