Are Garmin GPS Units linked to a Region?

Former Member

Declaration: I am not currently a Garmin user. I currently have a Tom Tom Rider 400 which has failed - twice. Today I ordered a Garmin Zumo XT.

This sounds "dodgy" but it is not - I am trying to help a friend who is technologically challenged and has a Garmin 395LM.

He purchased his device online from a reseller in the USA - including maps for North America and Europe installed on the device and he purchased a download for Australia and NZ maps. My friend lives in New Zealand.

He is trying to download the NZ map content into Basecamp on his iMAC but is having a great deal of difficulty despite very carefully following step by step instructions from the Garmin website.

Questions: Is the fact that his device was purchased in the US (with default North American maps installed) and his location in NZ an issue?

Are Garmin GPS units linked to a geographic (country) region? How can he get his maps downloaded onto Basecamp on his iMAC? What are we missing?

Many thanks in advance for any helpful feedback.

Regards

  • His location isn't an issue since you can add supplemental maps to Garmin devices but there are limitations to downloaded maps. First question before considering the BaseCamp issue is what exactly did he buy?  Did he buy the NZ map or a map update?  He needs the full map, if he simply bought an update that won't work as that only updates already installed maps.

    Hi,

Thanks for your prompt feedback. My friend purchased a dowload of the Australia and NZ maps, he did not purchase an update.

Could the issue he is experiencing be linked to the firewall software on his iMAC?

  • Could be, would help to know what you mean by experiencing difficulty. What exactly is he doing, where is it causing difficulty and what if any error messages is he getting?

Many thanks for getting back to me again and apologies for the back and forth. My friend is located 4 hour drive from me in Auckland and we are trying to sort this out over the phone.

Anyway, here are a couple of  screen shots from his iMAC - One shows Basecamp with Nth America and Europe maps installed. There is a view of part of Hawaii shown. Despite the Australia and NZ maps being available on the 395LM, the Australia and NZ map does not show up in iMAC when GPS is connected .

The second image shows what he can see on Garmin Express.

The desired outcome is that he can download all maps to Basecamp on his Mac to enable hime to plan future trips.

    Again Thanks

  • Ok, so I guess the map he bought is a downloaded one from Garmin's website. If that's the case those maps cannot be installed to a computer for BaseCamp to use.  However the map ought to show in BaseCamp if it's selectable on his device, although I've never seen anyone with 3 CN maps on a device before so it's possible this is an issue. You could try downloading JaVaWa's GMTK program and check the maps with that, though I'm not sure if that will run on an iMac.

Edit: wrote this before checking the screenshot of BaseCamp, you said the map doesn't show in BaseCamp when device is connected but it does show on the screenshot so now I'm confused?

    Hi,

Yes he downloaded the map. I'll get him to try downloading JaVaWa's GMTK program.

On another topic, If he buys a Garmin Zumo XT -( I think this is headed that way!!).... Will the Zumo XTtalk to Basecamp on an IMAC? (Provided he buys it here in NZ with NZ Maps loaded on the device as the default.)

Yes apologies - he confused me too!! ( I did say he was technologically challenged!) Slight smile Australian and NZ maps only show in Basecamp if the device is plugged in. Given what you say above about downloaded maps I guess it is case closed!

    Many thanks for your help.

    Regards

  • Probably best asking that query in the Mac forum in a new thread, as this is the Windows forum, or post in a specific Zumo forum like https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/
