Importing a gpx file and converting it to a route in basecamp

When I import a GPX file it shows it correctly as a track on the roads I had selected in googlemaps.

When I then try to convert it to a route it comes up as error and just shows the route as a straight line.

How do I convert the track to a route properly.

  • It'll only convert to a route if you have a routeable map selected in BaseCamp, which map are you using?  You also need to have a routeable activity selected in BaseCamp.  If you provided more detail then you may get better advice, but you haven't given us much to go on.

I've converted Google maps tracks to GPX files and imported them into BaseCamp.  The track shows up perfectly in BaseCamp.  Every turn and waypoint noted.  But when I transfer it to my device (Drive 61), it will show my waypoints in my saved places, but not the route... in fact, if I create any route in BaseCamp, the same thing happens... I get my waypoints but not my route.. I have looked in "Trip Planner" but my routes don't show there either.  I've even waited a long time, just in case it takes time for them to load.

If I transfer my GPX files directly into the GPX folder on my device (like treating my device as a thumbdrive), I still can't see any of my GPX files on my device and BaseCamp doesn't show them either.  It I transfer Way Points to my device from BaseCamp, I can't find them using Windows File Explorer, but they do show in my saved places.

I also have old waypoints saved on my laptop from my last Garmin device which broke, but can't figure out how to get them onto my new Drive 61.  Garmin Express only allows my to transfer the old waypoints peer to peer, not from a folder on my laptop.  If I transfer them onto my device directly (like treating my device as a thumbdrive), the files transfer, but can't be found in my Saved Places... nor can the be seen in BaseCamp, even though I can see them directly from File Explorer on my laptop (Windows10)

    Fun Huh !?

  • Tracks can't be viewed on your device, you need to convert them to routes.  Waypoints transferred to your Drive 61 can't be found using Explorer, they are sent in a file named temp.gpx which you'll find in the GPX folder.  When you boot your Drive it merges temp.gpx into it's database.

To transfer favorites/saved places from another device copy current.gpx from the GPX folder to the GPX folder on your new device but, and this is vital, rename the file to something other than current.gpx.  Now boot your device and the saved places should be there.  Once they are, and this is important also, delete the file you placed in the GPX folder.
