A few questions about files on my zumo 550 and basecamp

I'm in the process of reacquainting myself with my Zumo 550 and Basecamp. When I bought my 550 back in 06, I believe I used a different program on my PC to create routes that came on a DVD/CD.

The 550 has 1.2GB internal memory, and accepts up to 4GB SD card. The original NA map fit in internal memory, all of it. In 2015, I updated my maps. The new maps were too large to fit internally, and while some Garmin GPS could offload the extra information to an SD card, the Zumo(among others), were excluded from this. So I installed the lower 49 states SW portion. Iirc, the rest reside on my PC. So in this situation, on my GPS, I couldn't entire a state or address that was in the upper north east of the lower 49 states without loading a completely different section. This really turned me off to my Garmin 550, which was ~600 bucks, and as new was totally awesome! But in this neutered state was a complete turn off.

Recently, instead of updating the 2015 map, I decided to purchase the latest lower 49 states only map. This did install on my 4GB SD card, and with it being set as active map, I was back in business. Though when in Basecamp or on GPS map info, I showed two maps;lower 49 states SW 2015.10, and City navigator North America NT 2021.1.

Garmin express still shows installed map to be lower 49 states SW 2015.10

Garmin support tells me that express shows my old map as that was an update purchase, and my new map is a complete, new map purchase. When I inquired about freeing up space on internal memory, I got the play dumb routine.

I backed up my GPS, then deleted the large .IMG file along with corresponding .gma and .unl file. Doing this now only shows my new 2021.1 map in Basecamp/devices/SD drive, and on GPS under map info. Plus reclaimed over 1GB of internal memory which is where I'll put my music.

On Basecamp, under device/internal storage it's showing 'americas autoroute weather basemap'. What is this? On my GPS, in internal storage, there is still one small .IMG named gmapbmap. What is this? It's only ~14mb. There's also gmapbmap.sum, gmapprom.rec and gmapprom.sum. Are any of those files still necessary?

There's also gupdate.gcd, Garmindevice.xml and fs_image.ver.

All above mentioned files are in the GPS internal memory's 'garmin' folder.

In the Garmin folder, there's a folder named 'remoteSW'. Is this needed?

Also, is there anything I could change in those files/folders on the GPS to allow Garmin express to show map installed as my new map, as opposed to my old map?

Sorry for the long post, wanted to be thorough.

Thanks Rod

  • This isn't really about BaseCamp, but I'll try to answer some of your queries, for device issues you'd get better help at https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/

No idea what the weather map is, but gmapbmap isn't it, that's the base map and shouldn't be deleted, those other files you mentioned are very small and probably best left, although you may find deleting them does no harm.

gupdate.gcd is the software update file, it can be deleted if the device is up to date, although again it's small and could be easily left.

GarminDevice.xml file can't be deleted, well it can be but your zumo will simply recreate it when it boots.

remotesw folder depends on the device but holds information about satellites etc so shouldn't be touched.

Really though my main message is to leave it all alone, or you're likely to cause more harm than good and could end up bricking your zumo.
