Purchased Map not seen by BaseCamp/MapInstall

Hi.

Been a while since I updated maps on my Nuvi.

So today I used Garmin Express to download fresh maps (supposedly to device and computer): City Navigator US and City Navigator Europe.

(BTW: All of the Garmin software was updated to current versions before I started. Device was also updated to current versions of software.)

So. . . .the download went fine. The US maps are on the device fine, and basecamp sees the map.

The City Navigator Europe (2020.20) however, was downloaded but not visible in Basecamp or MapInstall.  I seem to recall using MapInstall to put the Europe maps on the Nuvi. . .  but the software doesn't seem to want to see the new Europe maps. The Nuvi itself seems to show the old European maps (2018.20) on the device. (I seem to recall having to use map install to "purge the old" and "install the new".

The only complication I see is that I downloaded the maps to a "Non-C drive" location. I figure that is the problem.  Garmin Express for some odd reason won't let me change the directory back to default so that I can try this again.

Any help appreciated.

  • I'm trying to work out how you managed to download both maps?  Which map did your nuvi originally come with, I assume the NA map as that's working ok.  The EU map therefore would have been a purchased one, and these aren't updateable.

    Thanks for the quick response

Yes. . . the US map came with the unit.

The Europe maps were purchased. . . with lifetime updates. . . .and I have updated it several times in the past (the device is vintage 2016). Garmin express immediately recognized that I was eligible to update both US and Europe maps when I fired it up.  The GPS unit itself has an microSD card installed (blank card originally). . . and pretty sure some of the map data ends up on the card due to space limitations.

SO - - -after reading some other threads; I went into control panel and "uninstalled" the Garmin 2020.20 Garmin map update.

Once I did that, Garmin Express program showed the c:\programdata\Garmin\Maps folder as the default location.. So I accepted the default and re-downloaded. The download was suspiciously quick. . . clearly there were some (large) files left on the computer from the download earlier in the day. Once I did all that, BaseCamp recognized the Europe map, and I had the option to install the map to the Nuvi. That choice fired up the map install program. . . and it is currently 77% complete; progressing slowly but surely.

    Will report when it finishes.

It appears that the upload to the unit went fine.

I may-or-may-not have only done a partial install; based on the fact that the unit still has some of the 2018 maps in there, and the 2020 maps lists a bunch of regions instead of saying "All".   I took a deeper dive into the MapInstall program to suss it out. . . . . . I think I got the 2018 stuff out. . . .and I am doing a re-download.  It's *acting* like I will get all of Europe in there. I am just checking occasionally as I do conference calls from a different computer.

Part of the fun is that I haven't done this in two years. . . . and even when I did this regularly every six months; it always seemed like something in the software changed every time I used it :)
