There is no detail when I zoom in on my map on Basecamp, apart from an odd main road it's all blank?

I've planned routes on the software before and I can see the routes on my eTrex 30x but there is no detail on the map on Basecamp when I zoom in on my laptop, just blank! I'm going wrong somewhere but not sure where. Thanks.

Sounds like you are looking at the base map and not the detailed map. I'm not familiar with the Etrex but I believe Basecamp can read the map if you have the Etrex plugged in to the computer via USB.
