Uploading Journey to GPS

After managing to get a trip created in Base Camp, I uploaded it to my GPS and was surprised to see that when I then opened it in the GPS, it calculated the trip all over again. The map looks the same, but without going through it in detail, can I be sure that the GPS trip still has all the detail of the trip I created in Base Camp? I was expecting all the details to be simply transferred from Base Camp to the GPS. The distance and travelling time were also a little different.

Also, is it possible to create a trip in Base Camp without the requirement to divide it into days? When I recently set up a long trip in Base Camp, I had to say it was just in one day so I could see the whole trip at once. Otherwise, I had to specify the days and it showed only one day at a time. My trip totaled less than 24 hours so could be accommodated in one day, but  a longer trip could not.

Thanks for any advice.

  • I guess you're trying to use the BaseCamp trip planner feature, something I toyed with a while back but didn't progress with it for some of the issues you raise.  I just create my routes using the route tool, much easier and you can split and view routes however you choose to do so.

As for recalculating, BaseCamp sends a route as a series of points, so your device (which one do you have?) may indeed recalculate it based on its own routing and avoidance settings.  If you've matched BC settings to your device the route should be the same, although slightly different routing algorithms may impact on that.  The only sure way is to look at the route on your device in BaseCamp once you've sent it and viewed it on your device, that way you can compare it to the BC route and check they are the same.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have a Garmin Drivesmart 51. I haven't tried the route tool so I'll check that out. Sounds like it might get around the day-by-day annoyance I experienced.
