Map slow to appear in basecamp

I've used basecamp a long time, and have never seen this before.

I have a newer Fenix 6X Pro. When I connect to basecamp, it is very slow to connect the default maps. As in, I have never managed to do it. I've let it download for up to an hour, and it has never completed.

I should add that it is also very slow for the maps to load on the watch when I first turn it on (~2 minutes). Also, I have loaded TopoActive Europe on the watch for a recent Europe trailrunning trip. It is a US watch.

This leads me to three questions:

1) Is it downloading the maps from my watch to computer?

2) If I allow it to keep going, will it ultimately download? As in, what is happening is to be expected?

3) If it manages to successfully download, will it be faster the second time?

Any help would be appreciated. I have some routes I would like to make in Basecamp, but can't do it because I don't have good quality maps that I can view!!

No to 1). What it does is index the data on your Fenix so it can use the maps, you should see a green line moving slowly underneath your Fenix in the left hand pane of BaseCamp. Once it completes 3) should be much faster (seconds)

OK, thanks. Guess I'll just let it keep running. Is it normal that it may take hours? I'm still surprised by this, and don't remember it with any of my other garmin devices.

It will depend on the number/size of the maps it's having to index.

The maps on your Fenix are based on Openstreetmap (OSM). You can get free versions of the OSM maps.

What I do is create a virtual USB drive and put the maps there. When you mount the disk, make sure it's tagged as removable (otherwise, BaseCamp won't find it). I create a short-cut that mounts the disk.

It won't work for maps that you can't copy or install to other devices.

Cool, I'll have to check that out. The default garmin maps really don't have enough detail in basecamp and I hate to keep paying garmin for the higher res ones.
