GPS for leisure cycling including cycle routes through towns

I am an OAP as well as needing glasses to read by. My electric cycle is fabulous but in my town we have off road (estate) cyclepaths. I have been using a Nuvi 1490 but cannot set up routes from waypoints. It comes out on Basecamp as a spiders web - trying to use the roads. Would a dedicated cycle GPS be any better? Or are they too small to read?

If you're getting a spiders web it will be due to the map not being a routeable one or perhaps a route created on one map that is then trying to use a different map. If you're creating routes in BaseCamp then sending them to the nuvi both need to use the same map, and also by the sound of it you're using cycle paths that aren't on the map. You need a routeable map that has those specific cycle paths on them, or use the direct activity in BaseCamp and the off road setting on your nuvi, the limitation is the map and not your nuvi.

As SUSSAMB said, it's a map issue.

I'm not sure if the Nuvi lets you load other maps. The Nuvi is targeted to automobile use and uses the "City Navigator" maps, which are also targeting automobile use.

The cycling (and hiking) units do.

Openstreetmap maps are fairly good about having cycle ways.

There are numerous free sources for Openstreetmap maps that work on the Garmins.

Yes, you can load other maps onto a nuvi. Sometimes the display isn't perfect but again that depends on the map.

If you want to use maps without having your device plugged in, you can put the maps on a USB drive or a virtual USB drive (in a \Garmin folder on the drive).
