Slow loading internal storage

I have a Garmin 66ST with no SD card and about 30 waypoints.  I am using basecamp 4.4.6 on a new windows 10 Lenovo PC.  Very fast laptop.
Garmin Express says GPS is current with all software/firmware.

When I connect the GPS to the PC and run Basecamp, it takes about forever to load the internal storage.  I mean 15 minutes.  Annoying.

Using Mapsource with my old GPS's, loading is almost instantaneous with 400+ waypoints.

1) any way to speed this up?

2) any kludge to use Mapsource with this unit?

Thanks,

Bob

  • I'm not sure why you're using 4.4.6, although I hesitate to suggest you update to the latest as 4.7 is known to have issues but you can get 4.6.2 from http://www.gawisp.com/perry/mapsource/

As for taking a while initially, this is due to BaseCamp having to index the maps so BaseCamp can read them off your device.  Mapsource is unable to do this, which is one of the benefits of BaseCamp.  However once the maps are indexed BaseCamp too will load in seconds.  I suspect you're not leaving your device connected long enough to allow the indexing to finish, so it tries again etc etc.  Keep it connected until the indexing completes, you should see a moving thin green line under the internal storage folder in the bottom left hand pane, when it disappears indexing is complete.

Another problem that can occur is if you have lots of BirdsEye files, again Mapsource can't read those which might also explain the difference.

  • I rarely use basecamp, but due to a waypoint problem I wanted to use basecamp to see if that would solve the problem.  Yesterday evening I connected my watch and I left it connected during the night.  Now more then 14 hours later basecamp still hasn't finished indexing.  Is this normal?

  • Not normally, but if you left it overnight did your PC shut down or usb port switch off? Also time will vary depending on the number and complexity of the maps on your watch.

  • Here are some suggestions to improve the loading time for your Garmin 66ST in Basecamp:

    1. Update Basecamp: Ensure you’re using the latest version of Basecamp. Sometimes updates include performance improvements.
    2. Clear Cache: Clear Basecamp’s cache to speed up loading. Go to “Edit” > “Preferences” > “General” > “Clear Cache.” aarpmembership
    3. Optimize Waypoints: Reduce the number of waypoints by organizing them into folders or using routes instead.
    4. Use Garmin Express: Consider using Garmin Express to manage your device and waypoints.
