Basecamp UK map is scrunched up.

This used to be the case until the device (eTrex 20) was connected, but since getting a replacement device and downloading Birdseye maps the map perspective never corrects. Have I missed a setting somewhere? My previous device had Scotland OS maps loaded rather than Birdseye selections, but that product is no longer available.

If you mean the downloaded Birdseye maps are not displaying correctly on your replacement device, have you set the Position Format and Datum to OSGB in Setup as it may be set to WGS84 by default?

The maps display OK on my device, but in Basecamp the map is foreshortened north to south. So each 10k square is only about half as high as it is wide. As I say, this is always how it was without a device connected, but now it doesn't reset when the device is connected.

Ah, got it now, this is due to an incorrect projection angle setting. It can't be changed in BaseCamp but assuming you have the map installed to your PC then download JaVaWa's excellent GMTK program, which along with numerous other utilities allows you to change the angle
