  • No features will be available in an upcoming 4.3.X version.

Is this stated correctly? I thought I remembered seing a statement that 4.3 would have new features?

Also, in another post, Falagar stated: "BaseCamp 4.2 requires .NET 3.5 and runs on XP. 4.3 will probably require 4.5 and will therefore not run on XP anymore. (XP is now more than 12 years old, official support from Microsoft will end next April. That means no more security fixes. Updating is highly recommended.) "

Is this official, 4.3 will not run on XP? I just bought a new ASUS netbook 4 years ago and use it for BC route planning all the time. I have two other computers running XP and wasn't planning to upgrade computers or OS for a while yet. I guess if that's the Garmin position, I'll have to stay with 4.2. I hope you issue a final 4.2.x release that at least fixes the remaining bugs before cutting off XP for those of us who won't be able to upgrade...
  • I guess it is a typo; "No" should be "New"...

Not a particularly good "sales pitch!" (has to be typo)

OK. And what about running under XP?

4.2.5 runs on XP, and will keep running on XP.

4.3 is most likely not going to support XP. So yes, you'd have to stick with 4.2.x if you don't want to upgrade.

I am afraid that what Falagar says is true. Due to the ever dwindling XP user base, the fact that Microsoft will no longer support the OS after April, and the prevention of using new .NET and other programming features by holding back .NET framework versions, it makes the best business sense for our team to begin dropping support for XP. We will continue to watch and maintain issues on 4.2 and will release bug fixes for critical issues going forward, but we will not be releasing 4.3 on XP. Falagar is right in that it is highly recommended to upgrade operating systems.
  • OK, I understand, thanks for the heads-up. I guess the obvious request is to make 4.3 such a great leap forward, addressing many long-standing suggestions/requests, that us XP holdouts won't be able to live without it, and will rush out and buy new computers! Helps you, helps the economy, the only thing it hurts is our bank account... Oh well.

This has been the game since PC's came out in the early 1980's.

I swear that Microsoft holds large amount of stock in RAM, HD and computer manufacturers.

. o O (Your PC which has been working for over a decade is obsolete. Our new O/S and software won't run on it so you'll have to buy a new one. Hee hee. Cha Ching!)

    Note to FALAGAR & JM47048:

With "no features" (I mean new features) :D along with a change in OS dependencies of this magnitude ("Bye-Bye XP", only working on newer OS's that supported .NET 4.5+)..... Might it be a good idea to release the next "version" as Basecamp v5.0.1? (It would avoid confusion and make a "statement of maturity" too!)

The other option (being based on .NET) is follow the .net minimum requirements. (In which case Basecamp would always be "versioned" as 4.5.01 up to 4.5.99 or until such time as new dependencies dictated a newer version of .net was required to run & then "make the jump" to the next version dependency, aka: 6.0.1 a few years from now. (Just a thought, but there is no "wow factor" doing it this way.)

I suggest this because so many early users "abandoned" Basecamp, and they don't realize how much work and change has gone into the product since version ~2x. I for one flat out like using it!!! (And I'm very critical of most software. Strange since I do not care for .NET or any other code dependencies even though I understand "why" they are "used."

PS: If I had to choose between Basecamp and everything else (for Garmin GPSr integration for "In the Woods" usage), Basecamp would be the winner "hands down." ~ Granted, I would miss Google Earth imagery (better resolution & date selectable "fall imagery" for hardwoods forest vs. softwoods via foliage recognition), and I would also miss their slightly superior map navigation (click and drag to move map regardless of tool selected)..... But HONESTLY, that's about it! ;)
.....So keep up the good work everyone, as your efforts do not go unnoticed/unappreciated!
