I've spent over 12 hours looking at video and reading everything on the web with no success. My understanding is that importing a AllTrails Pro GPX file into Basecamp will allow me to create a track on a topo map. From that I can import it into my eTrek 20x. However, Basecamp won't even recognize my GPX file. When launching Basecamp the continue button is grayed out, so I have no options. Is this just the way it is and that using these software programs on Windows 10 is prohibitive?
First off, I should say that this is all new to me, so it could quite possibly be my ignorance of the steps involved in getting a fully developed topo map with trail. I was able to get Basecamp to import the GPX. However, there is no topo, or anything, that helps define the surrounding hiking area - just an image of the hiking trail in red. My understanding is that I need to import a topo map first into MapInstall which then allows Basecamp to recognize and import the file. From that I can develop using Basecamp the track and waypoints onto the topo, and eventually have the eTrex 20x import the hike. Is this correct?
MapInstall isn't required here, that is a program that takes a map already in BaseCamp and installs it to a device. You want to see a topo map in BC if I understand you correctly?
There are a couple of solutions here. If you have a topo map on your Etrex then BaseCamp will read the map from that. If you don't you need ideally two things, first install a map to your PC for BaseCamp to use. There are numerous free OSM maps out there, which one is best isn't simple to answer and is influenced by amongst other things where to want the map to cover and what sort of use you need it for? Then having chosen a map some providers only provide a file to install to your GPS, others provide an installer to install the map to your PC. Perhaps if you give an idea about area and intended use we can help you select a map?
Thanks Sussamb. I appreciate your help, and it make sense to me. I'm in San Diego so I was looking to import a Pacific Coast or Southwest Region map. I've finally got it working. It appears that MapInstall today finally recognized the background contour topo maps that were not yet on the eTrex 20x. So, now that I have this a map background as my "veneer", I can import the GPX files over it. So, in my ignorance, it wasn't an issue with the GPX files.
