BaseCamp discontinued

This seems to indicate what many of us here have long suspected, there is no more BaseCamp development:

(Thanks to Boyd at http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/31269/is-basecamp-headed-for-extinction#latest for flagging this up, and the folks at GPSFileDepot https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/)
  • Thanks for posting that, shame but hardly unexpected.
  • You can get some hints here https://support.garmin.com/en-IN/?faq=0uDt3PZ8fM66OtVCxqytB7

Interesting.... A couple of the sections refer to the InReach.
  • They could have at least fixed the Basecamp / Mapinstall issue with 4.70 as a farewell gesture .......................
  • I got this response from Rich, 1/15/19 , from Support: “Basecamp, as it is, runs on 64 bits systems, Mac or Windows. With the appearance of the Explore website ( it will be expanded to included other devices) I doubt Basecamp will see any future updates.”

My question was: “I am a Mac user and faced with the Mojave migration problem. I am seeing conflicting message on the Community Support board -- Basecamp isn't being upgraded to 64-bit or that it is still pending. I'm also told that Explore is Garmin's web based answer to the problem, but Montana is not a compatible device. Is Garmin updating BC to 64 bit, or will additional compatible devices be added to Explore, or what? (Since the Montana 650t is still being sold, and it is stated that BC is the Planning app, I'm assuming the goal is to update BC, but I thought I'd ask.)”

(Couldn’t post on the 64 bit thread but thought readers would fine this useful here.)
  • * BaseCamp development has been discontinued.

That last sentence on Garmin´s Website is not there anymore. They deleted it.

    What could that mean?
    a) they were annoyed by customers complaints about it
    b) the sentence isn´t true anymore and they won´t dicontinue BaseCamp

    Or did I miss anything?
  • As the owner of 2 Foretrex and 2 eTrex GPS devices this news is extremely disappointing. The fact that Garmin has left me high and dry with unsupported Basecamp 32bit software for macOS I will remember when it is time to upgrade my devices. Further if the ”solution” is to have to buy new devices to use Explore website Garmin is sorely mistaken.
  • Garmin had said they'll be updating BaseCamp to 64bit, although that was due by now and there's been no further announcement ... However the post two above yours indicates it does run on 64bit systems ... So I'm not sure which is right.
  • I'm running Basecamp on MacOS Mojave without any problems, and also on W10 running through Virtual Box. However, as I do have devices that are compatible with Explore, I'm tending to use that instead of Basecamp.
  • I can't speak to Mac installations, but I have basecamp on an old laptop running XP 64-bit, a windows 7 64-bit desktop and a windows 10 64-bit desktop and BC runs fine on all of them. It would be nice to have it ported up to 64 bit as it would likely load big maps more quickly, but other than that, I don't see much benefit. Clearly, Garmin is not interested.
  • To clarify the 64-bit discussion a bit:

    - 64-bit Windows supports 32-bit apps just fine, and will probably always do so, since a huge reason to use Windows is to run old apps and games

    - Mac OS Mojave is the last version of Mac OS which will support 32-bit apps. So in the future, ppl who want to use Basecamp will be SOL, unless they run Windows through Parallels or something
