Trip planner recalculating

Hello,
Sorry if this is not the correct forum for this, but I could not find a better one.
Anyway I recently upgraded from a Nuvi to a DriveSmart 50.
The main reason for upgrading is that I like to use the route less traveled, and
that is also the route not auto calculated. So, I have been using BaseCamp
to create my route using none alert 'shaping' vias. Then down loading into
the DriveSmart 50 trip planner.

This has been working fine for the most part, but I got one thing that is very frustrating.
If I load a created trip from the trip planner that starts at my house it always works fine.
But if I go to an event or an airport where I am not parked exactly at the starting point
when I go to load the route from the trip planner I get "recalculating...". And it recalculates
the route, but not using the via points that are saved in the route.

What worked as a work around most of the time is to start driving down the route for
a mile or two, then load the route from the trip planner while driving. Unfortunately recently
even this did not work for me. I was driving down a major highway that was the first part
of my route and it kept coming up "recalculating..." every time I tried to load the route
from the trip planner. I had to drive down the highway for 15min. before it finally did not
try to recalculate my saved route.

Has anyone else experienced this?
Is there a setting that may be causing this?
It is a pre-planned saved route, why would it ever need to recalculate it?
And even so, why would it just ignore the via points in the route?

This is very frustrating, not to mention the safety factor of needing to keep trying
to load your route while driving, till it don't recalculate the route.
Thanks for any help.
Jim,

  • If you send a route from BaseCamp it's best to select a start point slightly away from where you intend to start. Trip Planner requires you to select the point to navigate to first, so you can then select that point, from there on it should follow the route. If you select any other point to navigate to your Drive, just like your nuvi assuming it was a later model, will recalculate the route to that point and only then follow the route you've sent.

    Thank you for the replay.
Next time it wants to recalculate the route I will try to select to route to the starting point first.
Although I am wondering what will happen it I never get close enough to the starting point, will it
at some point realize that I am driving the rote to the final destination and give those directions without recalculating?
Or will it keep trying to get me to drive to the "first location" that was selected?
    Jim,

  • It will keep trying. If you want it to follow the route you need to go to the start. If you don't want to go to the start select another point on the route.

Earlier this summer while driving westbound on California I-40 through the Mohave Desert using a single destination point further west in Barstow by the fastest speed calculation method, the Drive 51 recommended that I turn off at each exit. If I had been a passenger, I would have figured out why and where the device wanted to take me. However I really did not care in this instance, and had stopped at a roadside rest that may have been perceived as off-route and started the recalculations..

If I had wanted to deliberately create a shunpike route on old Route 66, I might have used multiple alerting waypoints and changed to calculation by the shortest - not fastest - calculation method.
