Understanding how BaseCamp handles BirdsEye files

I am setting-up my GPSMAP 276Cx for a coming trip, which requires many BirdsEye images. I had a few difficulties previously so put a couple of shortcut icons on the desktop.

On my laptop at home:-
C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Local\Garmin\BaseCamp\DeviceCache\3945529359\JnxFiles

On the 276Cx:-
D:\Garmin\BirdsEye

I normally tick the box to copy the image to the GPSr after download. Sometimes this worked but generally now fails to copy.

Having downloaded to the laptop a few images (.jnx), they display on BC's map if I've selected the appropriate item in the Library tree. (It would be good if there was an option to turn on/off all images.)

However, although new images appear in the Library tree under today, they do not appear in the Windows folders, as above. Disconnecting the 276Cx, I find that the new images are missing. Reconnecting the 276Cx and selecting the 'missing' images in the Library tree, then a right click to 'Send To ...' the 276Cx, they are slowly sent to the 276Cx.

These image files, then appear in both Windows folders. So where are these files hidden? Also any suggestions to overcome these issues.
  • I'm not sure what is happening here from your description. Generally BirdsEye files are downloaded into BC and will show in the folder you had selected when you downloaded them. They can then be copied to other folders or to your device.

No matter where you put your images in basecamp, you will find them ALL in “My Collection” folder. Don’t try to look for them in the C: drive, there they are of no use to your gps unit. All transfers to the gps is done through your Basecamp.
  • That's true of all data. Hence the term My collection ;)

I don't recall having a choice of folder, just dumped in the Windows 'Black Hole' know as C:\Users\...... in any place without order!

I agree that one should transfer within BC, but using folder display of both PC and GPS, can insure that all images have been transferred. Also a better idea of the amount of space used and not approximate values as within BC.

I don’t fully understand the way you are thinking, but of course there is many ways to skin a cat. I will try to explain the way I do it. First, attachment #1 shows the Birdseye .jnx files in C: drive. As you can see, the names of this files are not conducive for direct loading to GPS units memory or the SD Card. Attachment #2 shows the files loaded to the GPS Memory or SD card through the Basecamp. Now the files have proper names and are (I believe) set for the serial number of your GPS. It is very easy to see if all files downloaded to the gps or SD card. To me size is not important. I have 32 gb. SD card, and so far 98 files and 10 gb. used. The Attachment #3 is the way I setup MY COLLECTION Folder. As this is a root folder, you can add any number of folders and sub folders for your needs. Other folders will be added automatically by the system as you receive data from GPS,or download Birdseye images.

    Can't upload full size ,sorry.
  • Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately both sets of images are thumbs.

Now that Garmin have discontinued NT mapping on DVD, I've had to use the SD card slot for the maps. So all data has to go into internal memory.
