Urgent help needed - Via point fuel stops not working

Zumo 665. I have several routes planned in Basecamp. I have all the latest versions of everything. When I load longer routes into the 665 from BC that include multiple shaping points and fuel stations as via points, the via points do not show up at all in the 665. I spent hours last night fighting BC to plan our fuel stops for a motorcycle trip tomorrow. After importing them into the 665 I decided to check the route directions just to be sure everything was working as programmed. Even though all of my fuel stops are in the BC route, NONE of them show up in the 665. All of my shaping points made it to the 665, but not one fuel stop. I decided to make a test route from my home to work and then added a fuel stop as the only via point along the way. I loaded it into the 665 and it worked as it was supposed to. I drove the route just now and it told me to stop at the fuel station (though Garmin thinks the station is on the opposite side of the road that it really is....). I looked at the directions on the 665 and the fuel stop is listed in as a via point. I've attempted to delete and reload the route onto the 665 from BC and I still get the same result- all of my fuel stops are deleted....

This is a major problem with BC transferring data to the 665. I have matched the route preferences between the two and that also fails to correct the error. At this point, BC has become completely useless because it cannot program in anything other than start point, end point, and shaping points. I will have to create a separate route for each and every leg of the trip, which just completely sucks.

Any suggestions?
  • I too have been using BC for years over multiple GPS units and have never had a similar issue. However I never use the built in POI's without generating a Waypoint from them first (right-click, New Waypoint), then add the Waypoint to the route. This way I can view the Waypoint in Google Earth (Alt-V, G, S) and re-position it as needed.
With a Waypoint I can also add Notes including Website links. I also maintain a library of the Waypoints I create for use in other routes.

I thought that BC didn't work with Google Earth anymore?
  • And I bet they are in your Garmin too. Unfortunately I can't check at the moment but will try to later today.

Edit: Just checked my 2019.10 NA map and had no issue finding that address. Why you couldn't find it I can't explain.

I may have found the problem! My BC map is showing a date of 2017. HOWEVER, I just updated my device with Garmin Express before starting this trip planning. Would that not also update BC on the same computer? If not, that's absolutely ridiculous that, 1. It updates one and not the other, KNOWING that they have to have the same map to work together. 2. There is NO warning that a mismatched map is being used.

If that is the issue, both are a FAIL by Garmin.
  • Express gives you three update options. Device, computer or both. There are times when I've used all 3. For example on my laptop I simply want to update the map, not my device, which I do using my desktop.
I wouldn't say this is a fail, it's giving users all possible options.

The latest versions of Google Earth 32 and 64 bit works with BaseCamp 4.6.2. There was posts about it a few months back.

I don't see those options anywhere in Express. I did figure out how to update the map on my computer, but it's convoluted and "hidden" in Express. This is not good software execution by any measure.
  • Sorry but you say it's not anywhere in Express but then that it's hidden in Express, so it is there. In any case it's hardly hidden, it's under 'Map options'. How less 'hidden' could it be?

What? In Garmin Express, on the control screen, there is a button to update the software and it automatically checks whether any updates are available. It apparently does not check whether BC is up to date through that button, nor is it possible to update BC through that button. Instead, you have to click on another button, "Map Options", and under there is an option to "Install to computer". A logical menu system would have had updates for both attached devices AND the BC map under the same link. Instead, you have to go through a separate menu. This wouldn't be so bad if mismatched maps did not cause critical errors such as what I experienced. It wouldn't be so bad if BC checked map versions between itself and the attached device before transferring routes and alerted the user of mismatched map versions. It makes the entire hardware/software package untrustworthy. Poor software execution.
  • I'm missing the point you're making. Express is Garmin's update program for all its devices, this includes automobile, on the trail, cycling, watches etc. If you want to update a map it makes eminent sense to me to click on map options. It can't second guess everyone's differing requirements. I've been on these forums many years and can't recall someone suggesting what you are ;)
