This is probably more of a device question that a Basecamp question. Is there a deep dive document out there re: how Garmin devices create tracks? I understand (I think) that the device will start a new track if it loses its signal, or if it loses power (motorcycle turned off and on again). But there's a lot of other track weirdness that I have no clue about.
I have a BMW Navigator V GPS on my motorcycle. When I import tracks into Basecamp, there are often tracks that are identical in every respect except timestamp (exact same data points as far as I can tell**). There are other imported track weirdnesses like tracks with the same timestamp except for a ### subscript, where those tracks may or may not be the same. Or tracks that have the same timestamp and number of data points but one has only minimal data (basically just GPS coordinates) while the other has all the usual speed, elevation, etc. features.
Examples: I just came back from a ~5,200km motorcycle trip. If I select all the tracks import from that trip, the total distance of those tracks is just over 10,000kms.
1. Day 1 has two tracks. They are identical in every respect except timestamp.
2. Day 2 has 3 tracks, all three of which are identical in every respect except timestamp.
3. Day 3 has 5 tracks, the first and third (by timestamp) of which are identical and cover about the first half of the day, the second being just a portion of tracks 1 & 3, and the 4th and 5th are again identical but covering the second half of the day.
4. Day 4 gets real whacky: 7 tracks: 1 & 3 are identical, 2 & 4 are identical, 5 is a portion of 2 & 4, has the same timestamp as 5, but has a '001' suffix, and finally 6 & 7 are identical.
**I have not yet tried exporting individual tracks and doing a diff on them.
