Making Custom POI & Alerts with Basecamp

Hi, my OEM GPS unit in my Hyundai car allows me to save locations as alerts (with numerous options & settings) directly from the map screen while driving. This is awesome!

My very trusty Nuvi 2597 doesn't allow for this & it seems that lifetime map updates do not include safety camera updates. These I want to update manually to my device.
Can I use basecamp to get the coordinates of known safety camera locations & save them as alerts for uploading to my device? Will this delete the existing ones in the device?
  • Well BaseCamp would enable you to send locations to your device but not alerts. Look at POI Loader and instructions for installing alerts. You don't say where you live but it would be simpler to get Garmin speed camera updates or 3rd party ones.
  • If your Garmin device supports Proximity alerts then you could add a distance in the Proximity field of a waypoint and get an alert that way. I use them all the time on my Montana and RV770 and they work great.
  • You should also visit poifactory.com
They have download able speed and red light camera files. Use Poiloader to install them and it allows specifying the alert distance.

Problem with that is it's a circular alert so you'd get alerts on surrounding roads. Far better to use proper speed camera alerts, either Garmins or third party ones.

    Hi,
Thanks for your comments. I'm located in New Zealand. Have got POI Loader & have dabbled with CSV files. I have looked at POI factory & their safety camera database for NZ in my opinion is inadequate. I have the local GPS locations of safety cameras to load & building a list of known mobile speed camera locations, but unsure as to how set them up with alerts & image file on a spreadsheet for uploading with POI Loader. If I upload them will they take out the existing Cyclops safety camera alerts?
How can one know if the subscription safety alerts from Garmin are updated in reality?

Compared to my OEM Hyundai feature, I'm baffled as to why Garmin has to make it so hard to create alerts.
I use my Nuvi 2575 for work in company vehicles.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes I understand the matter of getting alerted on other roads, but that is not really an issue for me in this case. How can I tell if my Nuvi 2597 has the ability to set up & support proximity alerts? How do I set them up in BC?
    Thanks in advance.
  • If you install other alerts it won't delete the Garmin or any other ones unless you name them the same and overwrite the original files. Your nuvi will accept both proximity points and poi files.
  • Another question please...
If on my Garmin Nuvi 2597LMT I select & save a location as a favourite & name it with a speed reference eg BP Service Station @50, would that constitute a POI with a speed alert & function as such on the device? Could this method circumvent having to use CSV Files & POI Loader for setting up alerts for POIs?
