(Windows) Basecamp only transfers route start/end point to Nuvi 2450

I am planning a trip to some Eastern Europe countries, and I downloaded an OSM onto Basecamp, and changed the name to Eastern Europe OSM. I then installed it from BC to the SD card of my Garmin in a Maps folder. The only maps in the Garmin are the US map, and the Eastern Europe map, with only the latter checked. I'm using Windows 10. I'm in the US, if that makes a difference.
I mapped several points in Basecamp, created a route from these points, and Sent To the Garmin Nuvi. (Prior to the export, I deleted all the files in the GPX folder in the Garmin). Basecamp showed that it was downloading to the Garmin.
AT this point, I have my first question, which is whether I am supposed to close BC, eject the Garmin, which turns it off, and then turn on the Garmin? That is what I have been doing, and then I press Trip Planner, which shows the hourglass, and then the trip shows up. Or, do I leave it plugged in (forever) with BC running? OR just close BC, eject Garmin, and not turn it on?
Anyway, by following the first option (although I have tried the others with no more success), I find that the route appears in trip planner, but with only the start and end points showing. However, all the other points seem to be in the Favorites folder.
Any suggestions as to what to do/try would be appreciated, as I have to do this for multiple routes.

Hi SUSSAMB. Thanks for your prompt answer.

I have the latest version (4.7) of Basecamp.

I think that the 2 maps (BC and Garmin) are identical, as I had transferred it from BC to Garmin, and I could tell that BC was using this map to calculate the route as I could see the regions of the map on the screen. IT is the only Europe map in the Garmin.

However, I will try to compute a route using the approach suggested, i.e., connecting the Garmin to the computer and then creating a route to see if that provides all the points, and let you know.

I tried following the instructions in the FAQ:

"The easiest way to make sure BaseCamp's map version matches your devices is to connect the device to the computer. After BaseCamp reads the maps off the device, double-click the map listed on the left-hand side of the BaseCamp window."

However, in the left-hand side (under the Nuvi SD card), the Eastern Europe map does not show up. It shows up in the Maps drop-down menu as being in Basecamp, but not in the left-hand window. Also, the basic US map that is on the Garmin DOES show up in the left-hand window.

However, it does show up in both Windows Explorer as being on the SD card, as well as when I go to the myMaps on the Garmin.

    Any suggestions?
  • Just select it in the drop down window ... Some OSM maps won't show in that left hand pane unless you take certain action to set a 'flag' in the map file. This program can do that for you if you wish http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

I did use the map in the dropdown window, and, unfortunately, that's when I have the problem of the Garmin just showing the start and end of the route, but not the intermediary points.

I also noticed that there isn't a ".gma" file for the map in the Garmin Map folder on the SD card.....does that matter?

I used the javawa.nl program you suggested to have BC show the map in the left window, and I used that map to create a route in BC, and tried to transfer to Garmin, and this time it did not create any route on the Garmin, but transferred the points to Favorites.
  • No, .gma file is a file that helps unlock Garmin maps, an OSM map is unlocked already.

Ok, let's look at your route issue then. When you talk about intermediate points exactly what are they? How were they created? How are you sending the route to your 2450?

Hi Sussamb: Thanks for sticking with me.

The routes were created in one of two ways using Google Mymaps. In one case, I created a MyMap by finding specific places I want to go to. I then exported the MyMap to a kmz file, then imported it into Basecamp, selected all the points, and asked BC to make a route, which I then transferred to the Garmin.

The other way was to create a route in Google Mymaps, adding each point as a destination, and then exporting the MyMap to a kmz file, which I then import to BC, and follow the same process as above, except that in this case, the kmz file also includes a track that links all the points. I exclude the track when I ask BC to make a route.

BTW, it's really nice that this site saves what you are writing in case it goes down, as it just did....appreciate not having to remember what I wrote!
  • Well I guess that could be the issue although as I've never created a route that way I can't be sure. What I would try is to create the route in BaseCamp itself. You could use the start and end points of the MyMap route then let BaseCamp create the route between those points, adjusting it as necessary to follow the MyMap route.

After your last posting, I went into BC, and created a route from 5 points that I arbitrarily selected on the map, and then sent it to the Garmin. Again, all the points are in Favorites, but the route only shows the start and the end points of the route.
