How do I remove a map that I sent to my Garmin

I have a topo map installed in my BaseCamp. I picked an area and sent it to my Garmin 64. It shows just fine on my Garmin. Now I no longer need to have this topo map on my unit and I want to remove it. How do I take it off my Garmin? I know this should be simple, but I have not found a way to do this.

On my Garmin, I see this topo map listed under the Maps section where you can enable/disable the map view.

Thanks.
  • What *.img files do you have in the \Garmin folder on the unit? Do you have other maps installed on the unit?

Basecamp should be creating the map as "gmapsupp.img".

Removing the map is a simple as deleting the file (but you want to be sure that it's the correct file).

One trick is to change the extension (from "img" to "xxx", for example). That Garmin will no longer see the file but you can rename it back if you happen to have picked the wrong file.

Note that there usually will be multiple *.img files (the timezone and base maps, for instance).

I have some of my custom maps that you helped me with in the \Garmin folder. I just renamed the "gmapsupp.img" it and its not shown in the list now. I was afraid to do that b/c I thought that maybe I would loose more map information than just that one map..... Like they are merged together.

    thanks
  • Older units could only use one map. The name used for that one map was "gmapsupp.img". The main reason some providers use the "gmapsupp.img" name is to support these older units.

Adding map data to an existing "gmapsupp.img" would not work generally.

Basecamp just overwrites the existing "gmapsupp.img" file.
