Creating Custom Map

I currently have a Legend Cx, but I am looking really hard at the GPSMAP 64st. Will probably purchase in the next week or so. I mainly use my Garmin for hunting/hiking. I do alot of hunting on public land and in order to not cross over onto private land, I use my handheld along with .gpx files.

The problem that I have with ,gpx files is that they import into BaseCamp as tracks. (I get the same results wihen I import into MapSource). What I would like to do is convert these tracks into "Boundary Lines". Many times for a given wildlife management area (WMA), there will be small pockets inside the WMA that are private lands. Is there a way to make this new map have one name and when it is loaded/shown it will show the outer boundary and all the smaller pockets inside as well?

Attached is the .gpx file when I look at it with a .gpx viewer. Notice how the section is broken up into small pieces.

Thanks.

  • Hi send me your GPX file I make you a transparent map to put on any other maps
  • I use a program called IMGfromGPX to make garmin native format maps. It is pretty straight forward to do and load them into basecamp for transfer to the GPS. http://www.javawa.nl/imgfromgpx_en.html

    scdigps,
Attached is the GPX file. Srry it has to be .zip. It would not let my upload otherwise.

If you can make a transparent map, that would be super. The way it is now, when I import it in I get navigatable tracks, which is a problem here because there is a line connecting each individual area inside the main outer boundary.

    Thanks a ton.

I installed the IMGfromGPX tool and was able to create a new map. Just not sure where to go next. I did read thru the instructions on the page, but just now sure what to do next. Do I need to install/run the JaVaWa GMTK app or what.

I am computer savy, but this is my first run at messing with this mapping stuff.

    Thanks,

  • When you use imgfromgpx, check the "Include create gmapsupp.img".

Also, indicate a useful name for the "Name on computer" and "Name on device" (you can use the same name).

The "gmapsupp.img" is your map file. You can rename this to something useful (you want to rename it!).

You should be able to just copy the renamed file to the "\Garmin" folder on your device.

Keep in mind that some devices don't support multiple maps.

The map should show up. If it doesn't, you'll have to enable it in the device's map list.

I created the map for you.

I deleted the funny connecting segments and changed the color of the interior regions to red (you might want some way of distinguishing the interior regions from the outside border.).

  • Hi KArthur I get the GPX file, I will make a transparent map and in a few days I send it to you

    I already did it.
  • Anyway it's already done
Here is the map, it settles in BaseCamp

  • SCDI, I appreciate you creating this for me, but in the .zip there is a .exe file. Do I just run this or what? I am not real keen on just running a .exe without knowing what it does.

DPawlyk, If/when I get my GPSMAP64, I should be able to copy this file directly to the unit. For now though, is there a way to get the .img file to appear as a map "BaseCamp" or "Mapsource"? I tried to import into both of those and it does not recognize that format. Is there someplace I need to copy the file on my workstation so Basecamp or Mapsouce will see it?

Right now, on my Garmin Legend, I can't access the files on it like its possible to do on the GPSMAP64.

    Thanks everyone for the help.

The exe installs the map so Basecamp (and Mapsource?) can see it.

You can use Basecamp to install maps but I think that process only updates the default map (which will not be useful to you).

Basecamp can't use more than one map at a time. I don't think there is much value having the map accessible in Basecamp.

Yes. Copy the file to the \Garmin folder on the SD card in the unit or in the \Garmin folder on the device's internal memory.

That's what I do with my Edge 800.

You can't import maps into Basecamp.

You can install maps in Basecamp. I don't do this.

Basecamp will also find maps on removable drives plugged into your computer (img files in the \Garmin folder). That includes gps units plugged into your computer or virtual USB drives or real USB drives. I use a virtual USB drive.

Basecamp can't use more than one map at a time. I don't think there is much value having the map accessible in Basecamp (you will only see the the tracks representing the park borders).

The map I created isn't visible in Basecamp anyway.

If you want the cleaned-up tracks, I can provide that to you.
