Trying to load GPX routes from basecampto Drive51

Have been trying to load gpx routes onto my Drive51. Have figured out that I need to convert the tracks into routes which I did then I go to send to the 51 which it seems to do. I unplug the gps from the computer go to look for the files and can't find them, then when I go to turn off the gps I get a message saying Cannot save the "title of the route" and I need to click okay. Any ideas on how to do it or what I may be doing wrong? Do I need to load them onto a mini sd card instead? I have plenty of space or at least it says I have 4gb left. Thanks
  • If they are valid gpx route files they should work on your 51 whether on the card or device. Note routes on your drive can only contain up to 30 points, if you've created them by converting from tracks they may have many more. I've never seen a device report an error with the title of a route, but again is there something special about that? What are the route names?

Thanks for the reply but 30 points? That is freaking useless. Really, So how do you download a motorcycle track with more than that? Other than the obvious- buy another brand. Seriously, I did get 1 of the segments of the BDRMA route downloaded and just looked back and that 40 mile segment has 1200 point so your 30 points is not correct. Any other thoughts? https://ridebdr.com/MABDR
  • If it has more than 30 they will be shaping points. You can have many more of those, I've never needed to check but understand it's up to 125 between via points. You may want to check that route thats downloaded though, and check its all there.

Going back to your names, how have you named the routes?

Route is fine in basecamp so I can only assume it is downloaded right. The link I posted shows the download point for the route. In that download are 9 plus some alt. legs 4 of the legs uploaded fine the rest the garmin says it can't save but of course like any normal device would it doesn't give any reason why. Names are the given names for the routes as BRD has been doing these for years successfully all over the country so I doubt they did something that wouldn't work with fairly common gps brand. Now the gps isn't even telling me it can't save. It simply doesn't do anything again.
  • Haven't got a chance to look at your route now. Note a route that shows in BaseCamp can still be truncated when viewed on the device so you do need to check on the device that the full route is showing.

I'll try to get round to your route in detail tomorrow.

If the Drive 51 routing software is similar to the 2013 Nuvi 55 and sub automobile devices, it will probably be pretty useless for offroad motorcycle routing. I did download the above linked file source and looked at the GPX file in Wordpad, but not Basecamp. Suggest that you look for a device that is capable of importing track directly for offroad routing. Good luck.

Add edit: It is (was) possible to import a gpx file described as a route but exceeding 100 stops/vias directly into the Nuvi 56 device. The Nuvi56 device will recreate such a file as contiguous routes of 29 points each. I do not know the maximum number of points that can be routed this way. It may be 250, but Basecamp was not involved in my testing of this method of importing years ago.

Agreed, ideally you want a Zumo which will accept tracks, which can contain up to 10,000 points.

Had a quick look tonight but not sure which of the routes from that link you're using, but looking at the photos your Drive simply isn't designed for the sort of use you appear to be wanting to use it for.

I want all of those routes on that link. These aren't off road trails but actual roads, and fire roads. Nothing I should need an off road zumo for. Simply junk that Garmin said would work. So said. Will never buy another Garmin product. I now have a $100 pos paper weight that doesn't do what the Magellan that finally died had no problems with. If I wanted to spend hundreds of dollars I would get a zumo but it doesn't meet other needs. Guess I'll shop for a better company that doesn't lie about their capabilites. At least my 10 year old iphone 5 works for gpx files. Garmin, I guess can go in the trash. Thanks for your help but Garmin just lost a customer for life.
  • A Drive isn't designed to do what you want and Garmin don't say it would. The person at fault if anyone I'm afraid is you for not checking what you purchased would meet your needs.
