Route form track won't export correctly

Using a Nuvi 1490. I import a route created by others. As a track or (a route). The route displays properly in Basecamp, but it only shows the start and end point in the waypoint list. I don't see how to look at the shaping points but I assume they are there since the route displays correctly. When I export this to my device, and import it, then open, I get a single line, from the start to the finish. The rest of the route is gone. How can I work around this the easiest way?

  • Sorry but you need to be clear, are you taking about a route or a track? Your nuvi cannot read tracks. If you create a route from a track in BaseCamp you will only get the start and end point. Your best bet is to create start and end points based on the track and then let BaseCamp calculate the route. Adjust as needed to match the track then send the route to your nuvi.

I've tried both. Whether I import a "route" version or a "track" version, the route is shown correctly in Basecamp but does not produce the route on the device. The route is a complete trip, for a motorcycle. With a specific path. And the start and end points are closer than the other parts of the route. So having it calculate from 2 points will not result in the correct route. It will tak ethe shortest/fastest/etc route between those 2 points. I can do that without Basecamp. The route, and the turns show in Basecamp. There should be a way to convert that to a route, although I'm not surprised there is not?

    Examples attached.
  • As I've explained, if you start with a track that is what you'll get. You need to create a route yourself, adjust it to follow the track and then send that route to your device. It will then work as you'd like it to.

BaseCamp was designed for on the trail devices so some things that you might like for on the road devices simply don't exist.
  • You only see two points in the route file because the route only has two points. The flags you are seeing are Waypoints and are not in the route. When a Route is imported into BaseCamp, it does not do a recalculation using its algorithm; it connects and displays the points in the file (a route has via points and paths from one via point to the next). This is important to understand because if you transfer a route from Mapsource, obtain one using a different map or an unknown source, a recalculation on your device or in BaseCamp may alter the route.

As to why you see as straight line on your device I can only guess. The file itself does not contain an Activity Profile and if it is sent without one, a device might assume it is a Direct Route. Another possibility is that your current profile on the device is set to Direct.

What you should do is duplicate the Route in BaseCamp - you will need to verify that the BaseCamp recalculated route matches the original. Then you can either add the Waypoints into the Route or use them as a guide to add via points using the insert tool (zoom in and insert somewhere near a waypoint). Start from the beginning and proceed sequentially. If you decide to add the Waypoints, open the Route Properties, select the last point then use the + to add the next Waypoint in the sequence. Their are a lot of Waypoints to add or convert to via Points using the insert tool. Be sure that you do not exceed the limit for waypoints or via points for your device.

After you are done, go over the zoom in and go over the route carefully. You may have to do some adjustment to get an exact match.

Also, if this for a club ride or something similar, it would help if the the creator would rename the waypoints so that they will be listed in alphabetical order (add sequential numerals 01 to nm to the beginning of the waypoints). This might enable the dumping all the waypoints into the route at once and then moving the destination to the end of the list.

    Using a Nuvi 1490.

Until the OP upgrades at least to a post 2013 "Essential" Nuvi/Drive device, creating usable loop routes with Via points for a motorcycle may not be possible.

  • I have a nuvi 1490. Perfectly possible to do what the OP wants ;)
  • I should have mentioned another alternative. You can take the track and convert it to a route with a limited number of via points - say 20-2; then change the Activity Profile - try Motorcycle and Driving. Adjust this new route to match the original.
  • I find it easier to do as I suggested, but you can try BTLAAKE's method too and see which works best for you.
  • I usually route from scratch as well. But this is a rare instance where there are a lot of minor roads in the area. That fear aside, the OP should consider routing from scratch as well. However, I think starting from the track and quickly testing number of points/Activity Profile (ctrl-z is your friend, fewer points better) to get something that comes close to the desire route and then adding via points will be the fastest method.
