Google maps and basecamp

Hey everyone. I am brand new in this so please bear with me if I ask something which for you is obvious. I am trying to plan a holiday for 1 week driving in a different country. I have saved all routes on google maps. My concern is after watching a couple of youtube clips, how to transfer these on basecamp and then to my garmin drivesmart gps. I am managing to do it, but its just comming the start and the end of the journey, I wish it to come on the garmin with multiple stops as set on the google maps. I have like 7-10 stops on every day I planned on the google maps, and although the map is comming similiar on the gps, still its not making the stops, like the start and finish only. I hope I have explained well. Thanks and will appreciate your help, as its making me really frustrated.
  • Afraid that's how it works IIRC. You can't simply transfer Google map routes to your Garmin as Google doesn't send the necessary information to BaseCamp. Create the routes in BaseCamp instead and send them to your device and all will be well.

I am having issues as the map planned on google maps is comming different when I am creating it on the basecamp, I mean I selected specific roads for some scentic drives on google maps and on basecamp its using other different roads. Is there any other software apart from the basecamp that can transfer google maps on garmin using the KML files?
  • Not that I know of. BaseCamp will use the maps from your device. Even if you were able to get a route into your device using roads etc that weren't on your devices maps it wouldn't use that route but recalculate to use the roads on its maps. If you want to use tracks etc that aren't on automotive maps you could try looking for suitable OSM mapping.

  • It sounded like the Basecamp routing is taking different roads than the Google Maps routing when he uses the same stops, not that the roads themselves are different between Google Maps and the Garmin maps.

    ...ken...
  • Sorry, that was an observation, not a useful solution. The only answer, of course, is to use Basecamp and use different stops -- possibly more of them -- to force Basecamp to take the desired roads.

That wasn't how I read it but you could be right. If so it wouldn't be unusual for Google's routing algorithm to be different from Garmins.

I use Google's "My Maps" all the time in the manner that you describe. Within Google maps, create all your waypoints then use "Export to KML/KMZ" and do not check any boxs - just export it.
Next, use Basecamp to import the the KMZ file to a list. You must first create a list - then import to the list.
Next, in Basecamp open to your list, you must select all the way points and right click to "Create a Route".
Next, open your new route and Optimize and Recalculate it.
Attached is a route that I created in Google maps, exported to a KMZ file and then zipped it for upload.
You may try it if you wish.
I used all the waypoints in Basecamp, Optimized the waypoints, then exported to the Southbound 395 to a zip file.

You can down load the zip file, un-zip it and you should be able to import all the waypoints - then create a route - then open the route and optimize the waypoint stops.
    Hope that helps.

bighatnohorse is right, you can import maps from Google "My Maps" to Base Camp.
Just remember that when importing files to Base Camp from Google "My Maps" via the KML/KMZ protocol the route will be transferred as a Track.
You must then convert the Track to a Route in Base Camp before you can transfer it to your Garmin GPS.
