Basecamp "issues"?

Hi,

Firstly I am a tech retard so if I call something by the wrong name or don't explain myself correctly forgive me, but ask me for a better explanation.

I seem to have an issue with using basecamp and my GPSmap64, and I also have a separate question.

First the question. I have the oztopo maps as a memory card in the map64, which shows in basecamp only when the GPS is connected to the laptop. Is it possible to load the oztopo maps onto my laptop and use in basecamp while the GPS is not connected?

Now for the issue I seem to be having.

2 or 3 times a year I spend a week in remote areas beyond the reach of cell phone reception.

I have owned the map64 for less than a year and have now used it on 2 of these trips.

The first trip I did not take the laptop and had no issues, the second trip I did take the laptop and seem to have found these issues.

The first trip I used the GPS and recorded the tracks that I used, then when I got home I uploaded them to basecamp in a list folder and can revisit the region in basecamp without problem.

The second trip I tried the same (while I was out there on a daily basis) and this is where the issue seems to have arisen.

To the best of my knowledge I have not changed any settings anywhere.

There are about 14 different tracks stored in the map64 from this trip.

Basecamp let me upload the first 3 tracks (from the first 2 days) into a list folder. From the 3rd day on it would not let me upload any more.

It will let me see the tracks that have not been uploaded yet only if the map64 is connected.

It will let me see the 3 tracks that I have uploaded (without the map64 connected), or it will let me see the birdseye imagery, but not both at the same time. (I can still see the tracks from the first trip overlayed on the birdseye imagery).

In basecamp, if I click on the device in the navigation pane, the display window says the folder is empty(?).

The same applies if I click on the list folder, it tells me it is empty. Same for the list folder from the first trip (empty) even though it will show the tracks on the map.

If anyone has any idea of what is going wrong please help me.

Cheers,
Bob
  • First, there are numerous posts here about getting your maps to show in BaseCamp without having to plug in your device, basically they can be copied to any removable drive and BaseCamp will read them from there, so any sd card, memory stick, virtual drive etc.

If you can't upload tracks from your GPS did you save them or is it simply current track that you're seeing? Try going into track manager, and save the current track. You should then see it in BaseCamp and be able to drag it into a BaseCamp folder.

Note that in order to see the tracks and BirdsEye imagery in BaseCamp at the same time both the tracks and the BirdsEye files need to be in the same list or folder that you've selected.

    Thanks SUSSAAMB for your reply.

It has helped me sort out the problems I was having transferring the tracks and with the birdseye.

As I am sure you probably suspected I was just doing it wrong (I did say I was a tech retard).

I will look for some of the posts on transferring the topo maps to a memory stick.

    Cheers,
    Bob

To make sure you never lose track information, make sure your settings are set to auto-archive.

    Setup/Tracks:
    - Record, show on map
    - Record Method - Auto
    - Recording Interval - Most often
    - Auto Archive - Daily

With that it will create a new file for every day and you can go look them up at any time in the future. You do not need to manually save any track. All the daily files will show up in Basecamp along with any manually saved tracks. Your life will be simpler and you won't need to worry about doing things in the field or bringing along a computer.
