Removing Flags Display on GPS Device

Is there a way to remove or reduce the size of the flags on the GPS that mark every via point on a route? The flags mask the route on the GPS. Ive attached a picture of the issue.

In this case its a offroad "direct" route created in Basecamp with lots of small straight line segments to create a offroad Route where there is no mapped road.

GPS is a Garmin 855.
Thanks for any tips!
  • Not generally on an automotive device, you can do so on handhelds as they support Custom Symbols. If your device is a more recent one, 2013 onwards, you could try changing all the points to shaping points in BaseCamp ... they may transfer without a flag although I've never tried it with a 'direct' route so I'm not sure.
  • If the suggestion above doesn't work, you could try something more difficult that may also fail.

Export your Route and open the gpx file with WordPad. Use the Replace command and enter (without quotes):
"<sym>Waypoint" in the Replace box and
"<sym>City (Small)" in the With box. Click on Replace All and save.

Import the file into BaseCamp and open the Route Properties window. Click on the second point, then scroll to the end and shift click on the next to last point (i.e. select all the "don't alert" points). Right click on the selection and set all the points to Alert.

If this works, when the Route is sent to the device, all of the flags will be replaced with the smaller Small City dot. Also, you will get an annoying alert for each point, but you may be getting that anyway.
  • I will try that. Thank you very much. What would be a good current or modern Garmin GPS that allows me to transfer routes from Basecamp to get turn by turn directions. I no longer need audio output jack so I can get a newer GPS which dont have that anymore. My only requirement is that I can get a cradle or something that will allow a Ram Mount installation. Thank you!
  • Pretty much every Garmin GPS from 2013 onwards has a trip planner app and will accept routes from BaseCamp. There are ram mounts available for them also.
  • thx. Ill check out what GPSs Amazon offers.

Different topic. I have many old files in the "Internal Storage" of the GPS that I cannot delete from Basecamp.....nor can I find them when using Windows Explorer to view the GPS memory directly. Do you know how to delete those files?.
  • BaseCamp cannot access that part of memory, neither can Explorer. The only way is to delete them on the device itself.
  • I can find any means to see those files from the GPS itself, thats why I was asking about another method. Guess Im stuck with them. Doesnt hurt anything just an annoyance and using up memory.
  • What do you then mean about 'old files'. You can delete old trips in the trip planner app and Favourites when you select Where to, Favourites then tap the 3bar icon top left. Note this is for the more recent devices, if you confirm which one you have it may work slightly differently.
  • Here is a screenshot of the files on my GPS that I cannot delete. There are in "Internal" storage on the GPS. These are years old
From Basemap, it does not allow me to delete. The Edit/delete or remove functionss are grayed out or inaccessible.
From the GPS interface itself, these do not show up anywhere and while I have deleted the items that are shown the list seen in the attached (and more below) remain on the GPS.
From Windows Explorer I have opened ever folder available on the GPS and cannot find anything that is or suggests these files.

Its not a critical problem, just an annoyance that I can live with. But if your know a trick to delete that would be cool. thanks
  • I think I solved it. There were several old .gpx files on the device under Garmin/GPX. I deleted all of them using WIindows Explorer except for the current dated one. That removed all the old waypoints and stuff that I was seeing in Basecamp.
For a time I didnt want to mess with the Garmin device files in fear it would cause issues with the GPS, but I went ahead and deleted them but so far the GPS seems to be fine and the old files in Basecamp internal memory are gone.
