BASECAMP 5.0 (ish) coming

I contacted Garmin CEO Clifton Pemble in Kansas with my request, the need and the marketing advantage for Garmin. That prompted a phone call from the head of automotive (don't remember his name). About four months later automotive told me an update to Basecamp was going to be released. I don't know when or what will be updated - but it's a start.
  • Garmin will retire the Cloud Storage option. Be sure to export your user data from Garmin Cloud Storage before May 21, 2018.

Please note, data will no longer be available from Garmin Cloud Storage after May 21, 2018.

This is another example of internet storage being lost - remember the loss of GeoCities.

It's the potential removal of BaseCamp that worries me. With MapScource, ones data is kept in files that can be used by many other programs.

My first GPSr, a Garmin GPS75 came with PCX5, and had open data formats. I went for a month without access to my BaseCamp data due to a programming problem within BaseCamp and .NET runtime. (It would not work on Windows 7 Pro, but was OK on Windows 10Pro.)

    Mr. Pemble,

I contacted you quite a while ago regarding Basecamp. Without responding you sent my email to the manager of Automotive who called me and I got a lot of OK, that's a good idea type comments.

Your team rolled out a "update" to Basecamp recently which was really just to comply with the new EU guidelines, but at the same time removed one of the very top features in the program - connection with Google Earth. Those users that mistakenly did the update have rolled back to the older version.

Is Garmin going to update Basecamp, fix it's problems and make new Garmin automotive devices interface with the program?

    Hello Mr. Bell,

I am following up on your message to Cliff regarding Basecamp and Google Earth. We have an FAQ in our Support Center that shows how to export from Basecamp and import into Google Earth. Here is the link to the FAQ: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?fa...rth&tab=topics

The new process requires a few more clicks, but is more robust. In the recent past, updates to Google Earth have broken the connection between Basecamp and Google Earth. Exporting to KML and importing to Google Earth works reliably.

We do not have any other planned updates for Basecamp.

    With Best Regards,

    Mikel Mayfield

Agreed, I've been saying that for a while :)

This posting highlights current problems in the PC world. The loss of old features. MapScource was able to navigate, but Garmin removed it. I have no idea why, other than that it competed with Garmin hardware. The GE problem is again another new problem.

GE continually breaks third-party software at every update. Microsoft is also breaking other products with every update (or should I write - every bloat addition) of Windows 10 Pro, such that third-party programmers are giving up enhancing their software.

I can understand why Garmin is not adding full support in BC for automotive GPSrs. My current motorhome (RV) has navigation as standard in it's dash 'entertainment' system. My new small car has similar but with less features. So I now have two redundant Garmin automotive GPSrs, with lifetime maps, both superior to the builtin devices. I guess that sales of Garmin automotive products is falling sharply.

However, I also use my Garmin 276Cx on every long trip and BC + MS work OK with it. Unfortunately, CN is a paid update and not lifetime.

I think Garmin and Basecamp have come to the same realization that Microsoft and Streets & Trips came to several years ago.
Everyone owns a cell phone and Google is everywhere. Google maps can plan and send routes to the cellphone. And real-time information is provided to the cell phone GPS routing.
For me, Basecamp is useful to massage the data from Google.
More and more people use cell phone apps and the future for Basecamp looks dimmer day by day.
Investing more money in the development of Basecamp seems like a no-brainer. Garmin would be wise to pair with Google in future hardware development or they could lose the entire business.

In one of my conversations with Garmin management, having a device that was "live" via its own built-in cell service or something was hinted at. My comment was to hook-up with WAZE. That would fix the extremely outdated POI's and give you traffic and police speed traps in real-time, but it doesn't fix routing errors. I didn't update BC, but I have updated all devices to the latest map. Now a route from South FLorida to Birmingham AL looks like this. ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1377046.jpg

Actually the latest GE specifically states in its release notes that it's now set to work with BaseCamp.

Windows 64-bit fixes: joystick support; crash when hiding 3D buildings; COM application (e.g. Garmin BaseCamp) interface

Unfortunately what now doesn't work is that BaseCamp 4.7, the latest Garmin release, has removed the link but GE will now work with 4.6.2 :)

So GE can be upgraded to the latest (even 64 bit) and it will automatically launch with BC 4.6.2?
  • Yes according to others who say they have done it.
