BASECAMP 5.0 (ish) coming

I contacted Garmin CEO Clifton Pemble in Kansas with my request, the need and the marketing advantage for Garmin. That prompted a phone call from the head of automotive (don't remember his name). About four months later automotive told me an update to Basecamp was going to be released. I don't know when or what will be updated - but it's a start.
  • Wouldn't anyone who was using it outdoors like all the things im doing with it ?

    I was talking about Basecamp.

    No, not "anyone".

One problem with things like high-resolution images is that the device screen is too small. The devices might be too slow too (that's a compromise to get better battery life).

I wish Basecamp snapped-to-roads better when creating routes (a feature many people use).

    Do you use Mapwel?

Wouldn't anyone who was using it outdoors like all the things im doing with it ? Having full sat images and hi-rez updated topos for anywhere they went ? Also having it dual use so its also got City Nav to get them anywhere they needed to go ? Super rugged, easily powered, no need for outside cell network connections ? All while keeping a highly accurate track and even have a camera in it so you only need to take the 64. It can log heart rate, ambient temp and even bike speed all with a track log. The ease of using a software program at home on a nice big PC/Mac screen to plot out a path or route while also having the sat images and topos displayed ?

All of those things are easy to do on a phone plus much more. That is the point he is making.
  • I'm a bit behind things here.. I am 74 Widowed fulltime RVer and drive alone. I have been using Basecamp since it came out and have learned to use it very easy. I have an RV 760 and RV 770. When pulling 38ft fifth wheel I program my route/trips on a windows 8.1 and upload it to the GPS. I did not know that Basecamp is no longer being updated/improved. I guess I will never purchase another GPS and hope Basecamp works with future maps and my 760 & 770 keep working. I never plot a route on the GPS. I research my routes and want to upload them without being recalculated or modified. Guess I'm out of luck.

This is disappointing to me. I have never owned any GPS other than Garmin. I never use the GPS in my 2016 Diesel Pickup or one on the iPhone. To dangerous especially when being a single driver.

    I guess that's life.

    God Bless
    BC
  • BaseCamp will continue to work for a long time, indeed its predecessor, Mapsource, is still available to download and still works, so you'll be fine for many years yet :)
  • Yes. It's still available and works. It does however lack many of the features that BaseCamp has, eg support for BirdsEye. For some folks MapSource is still perfectly acceptable if the advanced features of BaseCamp aren't required.

I was a slow mover to BaseCamp as at first it was poor compared with MapSource. But I lost my last version of MS when I was in poor health for a few years. Thus the last version was possibly not the best. See http://www.aukadia.net/gps/lwg_31.htm

"The final and best version before the step up to v6.14, was v6.137."

What do readers consider the best version of MS? I would like to get MS in use again.

However, when I bought a Montana 650t, I was unable to get City Navigator Europe working due to a missing file in the installation of City Navigator Europe. UK Garmin support had me use MS in their problem solving!

One major advantage of MS is that it's possible to have two occurrences running at the same time. Not possible with BC.

I use 6.16.3 (the final version) on two PC's and 6.15.11 on a Win2K SP4 box. I exchange .GDB files between machines without issue (6.15.11 doesn't have all the features of 6.16.3 though).

Thanks Stewart for your comment. I had thought that no one had replied. Looking around the forum I could not find a notification by e-mail as on other websites. Then I discovered the subscribe button at the top of the topic.

Since posting, I've 'dug-out' my old Tosheba Satellite. It has 6.15.4 installed.

In my archive, I've found 'MapSource_6163.exe'

    Thanks.

What do you mean by "Mapsource is still going strong"? It is not being revised either... you mean users are still using it? What does MapSource offer over BaseCamp if anything?

I particularly like Mapsource for opening .gpx files so that I can just look at them. So I have set it as the default program whenever I click on a .gpx file. I find that much easier (and quicker) than opening BaseCamp, navigating to a (new) list, then importing the .gpx file. Particularly those that I don't know if I want to incorporate into my BC database. Basically I use it like Adobe Reader for .pdf files.
  • A new version of BaseCamp has been announced.. don't be to much exited ;-)

Next month, Garmin is releasing new versions of HomePortTm and BaseCampTm that provide improved data security. At that time, Garmin will retire the Cloud Storage option. Be sure to export your user data from Garmin Cloud Storage before May 21, 2018. In addition, BaseCampTm allows you to configure your favorite cloud storage provider as a replacement so you can keep your favorite waypoints in the same place you store your other important files. Please note, data will no longer be available from Garmin Cloud Storage after May 21, 2018. Detailed instructions for exporting your user data can be found in our FAQ.

If you used BaseCamp with Garmin AdventuresTm, thank you for your participation in our online community for the past 5 years. It’s with sorrow we announce the end of Garmin Adventures. Any adventures you have created in BaseCamp will remain on your local computer but will be removed from the online community after May 21, 2018. You will still be able to create Garmin Adventures on your computer and load them to your Garmin device. See our BaseCamp Support Center content if you need assistance.

For HomePort users, Garmin offers an alternative to manage your waypoints, routes and other user data, without the need for the computer. The new ActiveCaptain® app, available for both Apple® and AndroidTm mobile devices, lets you create and sync waypoints and routes between your mobile device and your compatible chartplotter and much more. Learn more about ActiveCaptain today.
  • They call in in a "Update" in the email. But what they describe is a downgrade. No new features or improvements, only removal of online features like cloud storage and sharing adventures. Its plainly a step towards exiting support for Basecamp (not that there has been any and past few years) and likely they have established an internal to Garmin only sunset date for Basecamp.
