New route in basecamp

I am trying to create a new route in basecamp. I watched the video tutorial and it seems very straight forward. However, it does not work for me. I can open an existing route in basecamp, then choose new route and basecamp allows me to draw a new route onto the same map containing the existing route. The problem then is that Basecamp seems to be saving the new route in the same "file" as the one that I opened. If I start with a blank map, as shown in the video tutorial, I cannot use "create route". The option is greyed out.

Until now, all my routes have come from my Montana, imported into Basecamp. I have not actually created a route from scratch in Basecamp. Is it really possible to simply create a route in basecamp?
  • Very possible. I do it all the time.

What Map do you have selected? What activity profile? Could you explain exactly how you are trying to create a route?
  • tks for replying, Sussamb.

I have trakmaps topo selected. Activity is kayaking.

When I open basecamp, it opens with one of my saved trips on screen. With that trip on screen, I can select new, then route and I can draw a route on the existing trip. Basecamp saves the new route as part of the saved trip, under the same trip name. I don't click anything to save the new portion; basecamp simply does it.

The only way that I can see to open the trakmap with no trip active is to select trakmap in the memory card menu item under devices in basecamp. That gives me a blank map of the area covering the most recently opened trip. However, with that map opened, the new, then route menu item is not active. I cannot find a way to start a new route on a blank map.

I could live with the idea of adding the new route to a saved trip if basecamp did not save it on the fly under the same file name as the previously saved trip. Then, I guess there would be some way to delete the portion of the new route that was the saved trip, and I would be left with the new route. However, I can't seem to be able to do that, either. I can see how to delete trackpoints, but the route that they are a part of seems to stay. When I delete that, everything is deleted, including the newly added portion.

I even tried the duplicate feature, figuring that I could duplicate a saved trip in the same map area as the one that I want to create. Then I could add the new portion, delete the previously saved portion, and I would be set. However, anything that I deleted or changed on the duplicate, was deleted or changed on the original.

Clearly, I am doing something wrong. I have spent much time trying to figure out what, but no success.
  • Something isn't working as it should, since having duplicated a route you should be able to move points on one without affecting the other. I suggest you uninstall then reinstall BaseCamp to see if that resolved the issue.

Incidentally I meant which activity did you have selected in BaseCamp:)
  • I did realize that you meant which activity I am using in Basecamp. I am using kayaking. :-)

I'll try uninstalling and re-installing basecamp to see if that will at least address the duplication issue.

I am assuming that there is no way to start with a blank map on which I can create my route. Correct?

Is that a function of the map I am using rather than a function of basecamp?

    Tks again for helping.
  • BaseCamp doesn't have a Kayaking activity profile??

But yes, there is a way to start with a blank map though how you would then plot a route I don't know, or do you mean a map showing but no data on it? To do the latter just create a folder/list with no data in it and select that since BaseCamp will only show data from a selected folder/list.

If you can find a suitable map with decent waterway depiction, try switching to Basecamp Direct Activity and then create turn points as needed for your watercraft routing. If mile marker waypoints are available for a river, they can be used standalone or in the routing.
  • Sussamb: In the activity list, I used the "add" feature and created "kayaking". Could that possibly be the issue? I could always use "hiking" since I did not choose any different features when I created kayaking.

When I said blank map, I meant one that shows the waterway, but with no previous route on it. I will try your suggestion. Tks

39_steps:I do have a map with very good waterway depiction. I will try switching to direct. Tks for your help.
  • Sussamb: I got it! I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly. One of my errors was using "new route" instead of "new track". New route ends up drawing very strange paths. New track did exactly what I wanted to do. Thank you very much for all your help.

39_steps: I didn't need to follow your advice, as it happens, but I'm grateful that you took the time to offer help. Tks.
  • New route will if you have a map that doesn't route the way you want to go. BaseCamp will route you as best it can along routes that are contained within the map. That's why you were getting very strange paths and why new track works as that is simply point to point and ignores the way the map would route. Selecting new route and the Direct activity profile, not the one you created, would achieve the same result.
