How can I insert a waypoint, (shown as a default flag or selected symbol) into an existing route such that these points appear on the route and when loaded to the GPS the points are announced? Thx
When insert waypoint per the instructions above, the route recalculated and adds a 20 mile circle back through the waypoint. I want to simply add a waypoint on the existing route without changing the route. Any thoughts on how to do this? thx
Well if you add a point it will recalculate. That's what most folks would want. If it then doesn't go the way you want add further points until it does.
It's difficult to tell what is happening from your description. It could be an issue with the ordering of your points. I believe SUSSAMB's instructions will place the new point at the end of the list. At this point, you will need to select the inserted point and use the up/down arrows on the right side to re-position the new point to its proper place.
Another suggestion would be to select the existing point after where you wish to add the new point before adding it. This should put it in the proper placer. For example, if you want to add a point between existing points 3 and 4, select point 4 before clicking on the plus symbol.
I see the ordering issue. Thanks BT. How about this......can one change or replace an existing shaping point with a flag or waypoint without changing the route?.
It depends on the change. Garmin uses two types of Routes; Direct and Automated
Direct Routes are only created with the Direct Activity Profile (or if a map does not contain routable features). These routes are always direct connections between the points shown on the Properties Tab of the Route Properties. So a new point or moving a point must change the Route.
Automated Routes will always be recalculated anytime a change is made. This type of Route is created with any Activity Profile except Direct. Paths between the points shown on the Properties Tab of the Route Properties must follow routable features (roads/trails) on the map. The final route will depend on the routing settings for the Profile (Edit Menu > Options > Activity Profile; Routing Tab and Activity (dropdown list)).
Points for either type of route can be Waypoints created by a user or points added by clicking on the map. Any of these points can be deleted or moved. But keep in mind that if you move a Waypoint in a route, it changes the location of the Waypoint and will change any Route that uses that Waypoint. Suppose you use a Waypoint called Home in all of your Routes and later move across town. If you were to change the location of the Waypoint Home or move Home in any of the Routes, it will change in all the routes forcing a recalculation of all Routes.
Point orders can be changed on the Properties tab by selecting a point and using the Up and Down arrows on the right side. A point can be deleted by selecting a point and pressing the delete key. A point can also be deleted on the map using the Eraser Tool. Move the tool towards a point you wish to delete until you see an ?X? then click. Changes can be undone with ctrl-z.
Non-Waypoints can be added using the Pencil tool. This works on the Map by moving the tool until you see a thick line segment between two points where you wish to insert a new point. Left click when the segment appears and it will create rubber bands from pt1 to the cursor to pt2. Move the cursor to the location of the new point and left click again. A right click will undo the rubber banding if you chose the wrong segment for insertion.
Points can be moved on the map using the Move Tool - it is between the Pencil and Eraser on the Drawing Toolbar. Move the cursor near a point of a selected Route until a gray dot appears. Hold down the left mouse button and move to the new location and release the button.
If the Route changes after adding/moving points, then you will have to add additional points to bring it back to its original shape.
this is a not automated scenario. I have a shapping point that forces the route to my choosing. I want to change the "dot" of that shaping point to a flag for a waypoint so I can put a symbol and layover time. Can I do that without messing up the original route?
Well you can right click any point in Route properties and change it from a waypoint to a shaping point and vice versa. Normally that wouldn't change the route.
that would work but I dont see any feature like that when I right click a point shown in the route properties window......any point. In the column "Via Point Name" I select a point and right click and see a menu with the follwoing: Edit Via Point, Show on Map, playback, alert on arrival, cut, copy past, delete, divide, select all.. but nothing on changing a shaping point dot to a waypoint symbol.
I do not believe that a via/shaping point (i.e. a route point created by clicking on the map) can be changed into a Waypoint. Waypoints are listed under "My Collection" while via/shaping points are not; they are only appear when looking at the details of a Route. The symbol for a Via/Shaping point cannot be changed from their default symbol.
This is always a confusing subject due changes in terminology as well as the capabilities of devices over time. To put us on the same footing, I'll give you my definitions. Via Points under the Route Properties can be one of three types; a literal Waypoint created separately and visible under "My Collection"; a Via Point created by clicking on the Map and set to Alert; a Shaping Point created by clicking on the Map and set to Don't Alert. Note that many devices consider Via and Shaping points to be the same.
With any type of point you should be able to set a Departure and/or Arrival Time by right clicking on the point and selecting Edit Via Point. If you wish to replace a via/shaping point with a Waypoint you will need to create the Waypoint at the location of the via/shaping point; add it to the route at the proper point in the list and then delete the via/shaping point in the Route.
