Hi there! I have this 2007 Honda Goldwing motorcycle with a GPS and I have this newer gmapsupp image file to put inside a CF card via my computer but it's not working because the size exceed 2 GB.

So, I would like to know how to edit the file, remove some states and countries to make it under a 2 GB gmapsupp image file.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the response SUSSAMB. How do I get the file into BaseCamp? It isn?t a Garmin Product so BaseCamp doesn?t recognize it as an installed map but it is in an .img file format.

Thank you for the response tmk2. I have GPSMapEdit installed but there is little documentation on how to use it and my efforts have been futile. I am unable to find a legitimate download for cGPSmapper. Most of the links point to a website called Monster-something-or-other and contains a virus.

I don't have access to my personal computer now, so for the moment I cannot assist you any further. Sorry.

That's what I was affraid of. I might have a precompiled binary for the Linux OS somewhere lying around on my personal computer, but it'll be a couple of days before I have access to it. If I manage to come up with something of use I'll let you know. But don't hold your breath.

You'll need to go to where you got the map from. Many sites also supply an .exe file so you can install the map to your PC for BaseCamp to use.

I too am trying to make my img file smaller. I have an eTrex 10 that I downloaded a topo file of North Carolina to use.

The eTrex 10 is a non-mapping model. It comes from the factory with an extremely basic Worldwide map of only 558KB. Base maps on the proper mapping units are about 100 times larger. No other maps can be viewed on an eTrex 10 and there's only about 7MB of spare space anyway.
  • Actually there is a way to load a map to an Etrex10 that involves replacing the basemap. That is what is being attempted by Tewhano

Even if it is possible, what sort of topo map could be made under 7MB in size? There's no mSD card slot either. A whole lot easier to spend another $100-$150 and get an eTrex 20x that is colour mapping, has a much large memory (GB's) and also a mSD card slot.

Garmin's img format can be very space-efficient. A detailed non-routable map of a large city or a national park can be squeezed into few MB. I used to own an eTrex Legend, which had 8 MB of memory for maps. While it was not possible to upload a detailed map of the whole country, I could always squeeze quite a lot into the device.
  • Agreed, same on my older Etrex, amazing what you can do with a few MB :)

The topo map of North Carolina I installed has 109 files in img format, the largest is 3mb. Each file covers around 20x30 miles with contour lines at 40 feet. If I had another 100-150 dollars to spend I still would not have bought the eTrex 20. The eTrex 10 is all I need. I just need to learn how to use it to it's full potential.
