Base Camp Route Shapng Points Vs Waypoints

I have created a route in Basecamp. There are some waypoints and some shaping points on the route.
It appears that when I am running on the route, the shaping points can be ignored, the route is re-calculated to ignore them.

Q1: How do I lock the route so it does not re-calculate? I want to go on the designed route not a re-calculated one.

Secondly, It appears that unless I actually stop at a waypoint and wait a minute, the device thinks I have not arrived and tries to route me back to that last waypoint.

Q2: How do I ensure waypoints are acknowledged without have to stop and wait?

Yes, I can do that but in the outback there is a need for a lot of shaping points to ensure the correct off-road track is used. None of the routable maps give me routes I really want by default.
If I turn alerts OFF for these shaping points turned waypoints, do you think they will suffer the same thing from the miss and cause re-calcs? or will they just be ignored when you miss them?
I suppose I'll have to just try it.
  • The whole point of a waypoint is that it's a place you need to visit, so it can't be missed. If the waypoint isn't placed accurately enough then I'm afraid there isn't much you can do. It won't be acknowledged by the device and you will be called back to it. That's just the way it is.

OK - So I did a little test route and went around it several times.
It has a start a finish, 2 waypoints and a shaping point.
When I try to avoid the middle waypoint and re-join the route, I am not allowed to continue down the route, I am forced to return to the waypoint even when I set the waypoint to don't alert.
So I'll try again with only shaping points.
  • As already mentioned, you must visit a waypoint, or more strictly a viapoint. That's the whole point of them. Whether they alert or not doesn't affect the behaviour.

It is summertime in the Northern Hemisphere, so even a modest increase in the foliage on trees along a narrow street can result in location errors that result in a recalculation.

    Hello Alan,
Like SUSSAMB said....you cannot lock a route and that is exactly why I do not use them for endurance horse racing on back country trails.
One option is to create a route that goes exactly where you want THEN BaseCamp can convert it to a track. I do not navigate tracks (but you can with practice) and tracks do not recalculate. I add waypoints for the locations of water and several mandated stops where horses are evaluated by vets and allowed to rest for 20, 30 and sometimes 60 minutes. Many riders use Oregons, Montanas, various GPSMAPS, etc, load the tracks and then consult the screen as they approach turns or junctions to visually see which way to go or if a waypoint is coming up.
Another option is to create the track you want then upload it to Garmin Connect and save it as a COURSE (which can be navigated with practice) and again a separate waypoint file can be added to designate important points that will show on the screen along the course. I do not know if your device can use Courses.
These 2 options do not navigate to the waypoints so you can skip them or miss them by a mile and it has no effect.
When using tracks you can wander off anywhere to sightsee and then wander back to visually join the track anywhere. In unfamiliar territory sometimes I do not know which way to go on the track so I just zoom out until a waypoint shows on the screen and then I know which way to go and zoom back in to have more detail on the screen.
I found that for me, Courses were not so easy to use.
  • Unfortunately, there is no way for Alan to import a track into his nuvi 2597. To import tracks, he would need a Garmin zumo or handheld.
