How do I display BirdsEye downloaded map ONLY

I've just started in earnest with BaseCamp (4.6.2 with Win 10). Currently I have two questions I'd like answered if anyone can help?

Background
I've downloaded the Lake District (Garmin Discoverer v2 ) using a 3000sq km freebie that came with the purchase of an eTrex 20x. It's in BaseCamp successfully.
I also have a raft of other OSM Topo maps downloaded from TalkyToaster and other similar websites. These appear in the 'Maps' drop down menu.

Question 1
How can I see the OS mapping ONLY in BaseCamp? I've double clicked the map and made the draw order 100 but elements of whichever map is selected in BaseCamp's 'Maps' drop down menu appear on top of the OS map.

Question 2
What's going on here......When viewing the downloaded OS mapping if I select 'Global Map' from the 'Maps' drop down menu it badly distorts the OS map. The OS map stretches out horizontally so all the grid squares become grid rectangles.

Any help gratefully received.
  • Q1. BaseCamp will display whatever is in the folder or list you have selected as well as the map you've selected. So if you don't want your BirdsEye Select OS map to show remove it from the selected folder or list. If you want it to show and not any map turn off the maps.

Q2. That's a bit more tricky and is to do with projection angles. Unlike the older MapSource you can't change them in BaseCamp. However Google JaVaWa as there are tools there to do so. I'm away right now so can't check for you.

Thanks for your help. However, I don't think I'm much nearer a solution....... See attached screenshot which shows the problem.

That blue text is not part of the OS map...it's an element of the TalkyToaster map selected in the drop down menu.

When I'm looking at the Lake District BirdsEye 25k map I don't want to see anything else.
I have many other maps as you can see and I haven't started adding European ones yet. I don't want to have to turn them all off just to view the single Lake District BirdsEye Select map properly. Afterwards, I'd have to turn them all back on again to browse them again....not very practical.

Question 3 - How do I turn the maps off anyway (those in the drop down menu)? I can't find that button.
If there was a garmin map that was just entirely transparent in the list I could just select that.
That would have the same effect as turning all the maps off. Perhaps the software has an equivalent function?

Question 4 - Can I get the BirdsEye select map to be part of the main maps menu? Then I could just select the map I want to see.

    Any other solutions?
  • You don't need to turn off all maps, indeed you can only ever select one. I can view just BirdsEye Select without any issues. You have a setting incorrect somewhere but as I'm away at the moment I can't check where it is. Look under the various menus. You could also try selecting a map other than the TT one to see if that helps.

As for Q4. The answer is no.

    Sussamb,

Thanks for persevering. I think I've sussed it now.

For any others wrestling with this one....

The downloaded BirdsEye select OS map appears as an overlay NOT a map in the 'Maps' menu. So make sure overlays are 'showing' in the drop down menu in the bottom left hand corner of the map box. The OS map overlay must be double clicked and the draw order set to 100 (Top) to help obscure any other map elements. This however won't necessarily completely stop elements of the map selected in the 'Maps' drop down menu from showing. I was left with text place names dotted about that weren't part of the OS map.

However any errant map elements still showing were removed by choosing 'Basic Map Only' from the 'View' drop down menu.

I notice that the OS map overlay is distorted to a greater or lesser degree by whichever map I have selected in the 'Maps' drop down menu. The Global map causes the worst distortion but maps from TalkyToaster and OpenMTB distort it slightly and differently. Waypoints placed on the grid intersections seem to move with the intersections (when selecting those different maps) so the navigation accuracy doesn't seem to be compromised even though the map looks wrong. An exported gpx track is OK.
