Installing maps on networked drive?

Because my laptop's C:\ drive is a small-capacity SSD, I store most of my data files (for all applications) on a mapped network drive (configured as my drive "P:". Therefore, I want to do likewise with Garmin Express's installed maps.

So, I am trying to copy the maps from my Zumo 340. I've already created and set up the maps folder as follows: P:\Data\Garmin Basecamp maps, and this location is embedded in my Garmin Express (I was also going to ask to change this, but have read the adjacent thread "Map Install Location" and learned that I'd need to reinstall Express to do so).

It goes through the procedure: Step 1 of 2... Step 2 of 2... Updating maps... Activating maps... and finishes with "There was an error installing the update" I can confirm that the target folder is still completely empty.

Any ideas please? Is the problem that the program doesn't support networked drives?
  • Thanks. I couldn't work out how to create a virtual removable disk on my network access drive (is it actually possible? Otherwise this is no good to me) which is what I'd need to do, but to test it out I created one on my SSD C: drive., and transferred the Zumo's map over to that.

It will work on a network drive.

You can easily try it by moving the virtual disk file to the network drive and mounting it from the new location.

Basecamp duly recognised a map on the new virtual disk, but came back with the same error message as it did when I used the real thumb drive.!

The problem you are having isn't related to the drive the file is on (it's some other problem with the file itself).

Probably its not the file, but Garmin BaseCamp product cache which can get corrupted.

Clear the three mentioned Cache folders by hand:
    C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\Garmin\BaseCamp\CardPrductCache
    C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\Garmin\BaseCamp\PrductDataCache
    C:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Local\Garmin\BaseCamp\TileCache

Do this when BaseCamp is closed!

Well, I'd got as far as managing to successfully install the virtual disk, and then use openstreetmap content with BaseCamp; but my own Zumo maps were still not right, but - fantastic - this trick of clearing the caches has done the job! Thanks so much.

My only issue now is that I do need to have the virtual disk on my network drive, as there isn't room for it on the small SSD C:\ drive...

...excellent! But please could you tell me what file(s) I need to move? Struggling to find them

    Thanks again - getting there!

When you use the imdisk program, you specify a file name for the virtual disk (you can also specify how big it should be).

I created a shortcut to "mount" the virtual disk.

    C:\Windows\System32\imdisk.exe -a -o rem -t file -m #: -f C:\Users\dpawlyk\Documents\GPS\EDGESD_VIRTUAL

This is the file name that I told imdisk to create the disk as. The "-o rem" tells imdisk to flag it as "removable".

It's just a file. You can move (or copy it) it anywhere.

    C:\Windows\System32\imdisk.exe -a -o rem -t file -m #: -f C:\Users\dpawlyk\Documents\GPS\EDGESD_VIRTUAL

This seems a bit different to what I downloaded from your link; that set up imdisk as an entry in the Control Panel, with a GUI to set the parameters (which didn't include drive location).

I've tried running the above from as a shortcut from my desktop (is that right?). I replaced your C:\... etc with P:\Garmin. When I ran the shortcut, a command prompt window flashed passed, I think with an error message inside, but too fast to read.

I tried entering the following manually at the C:\ command prompt:
C:\Windows\System32\imdisk.exe -a -o rem -t file -m #: -f p:\garmin and got: "Creating device... Error creating virtual disk: Access is denied"
(The networked mapped P: drive does exist, as verified by "net use p:", and I have full RW access to it, under windows at lease.

I tried creating it on the local drive instead, as a test:
C:\Windows\System32\imdisk.exe -a -o rem -t file -m #: -f c:\garmin and got: "Creating device... Error creating virtual disk: The system cannot find the file specified"

    Any more thoughts please?!

There are a few different ways to use imdisk.

C:\Windows\System32\imdisk.exe -a -o rem -t file -m #: -f c:\garmin and got: "Creating device... Error creating virtual disk: The system cannot find the file specified"

Basically, how this works is the following:

    1) Creating a big file to serve as the virtual disk. This file will exist on your C: drive OR your network drive.
    2) "Mounting" the big file as a virtual disk. When this is done, you'll get a new drive (using a letter that is different from the C: or network drive).

The short cut is just doing step 2 (which means the file has to exist first).

    ==============

    1) Run the imdisk GUI (through control panel).

    2) Select File-> "Mount new virtual disk".

    3) Enter a file name in the "Image file" box. This includes the folder and the name of the virtual disk file (you can use the "..." to the right to pick the folder). Make the name something meaningful (so you know it's the virtual drive file). This is the name of the file that you can move/copy.

    4) Pick the appropriate parameters. The size of the virtual disk has to be bigger than the size of your map files (you might want more room than that to be able to put other map files on it).

    5) Make sure you check "Removable media".

    6) Note the drive letter.

    7) Click on OK to (1) create the virtual disk file and (2) mount it.

    ==============

If you don't get any errors, you will now see a new drive with the drive letter you noted at step 6.

On that drive, create the "\Garmin" folder and copy your maps there.

Note that you'll see the name you

The shortcut stuff I mentioned needs the name of the file you entered at step 3.

    ==============

If you want to copy or move the big virtual disk file, you have to unmount it. You can do that through the imdisk GUI.

Select (highlight) the disk in the list and then select "Selected->Remove" (this just disconnects the file from the drive letter; it doesn't delete the file).

You can also unmount the virtual disk in Windows Explorer. Right click on the drive letter and select "Eject".

This is great, thanks so much for your patience! Finally, I'm able to run BaseCamp using a map on my network drive!!

So, now the fun really begins: entering the evidently pretty steep BaseCamp learning curve. I did already make a start, but having ascertained that there was an issue over running it with a networked map, I thought I should solve that problem first in case it turned out to be a non-starter for me.

I'm sure I'll be back here soon!
  • Glad that issue is sorted. I'll now close this thread.
